Parliament Rejects May's Brexit Deal Again: What It Means And What's Next

Revocation of Brexit on the horizon

Lawmakers voted by 321 to 278 in favor of a motion that ruled out a potentially disorderly "no-deal" Brexit under any circumstances.

Publishing "temporary" tariffs and arrangements in Northern Ireland for a no deal Brexit, the British government signaled that they want to keep the option on the agenda but it is likely that MPs will reject it Wednesday evening.

"After three months of running down the clock, the prime minister has, despite very extensive delays, achieved not a single change to the withdrawal agreement", he said.

Their motion called for a post-Brexit transition period of up to three years even in a No Deal scenario, which would give both sides the time to establish a future trade deal.

Another euroskeptic Conservative lawmaker, Andrew Bridgen, said parliament no longer represented "the people", who had voted for Brexit, by 52 percent to 48, in a referendum in 2016.

But Chief Secretary to the Treasury Liz Truss indicated that she believes the deal could still be brought back a third time to the Commons and secure a majority.

Just like when the, European Union negotiator Michel Barnier responded that the solution to the "deadlock can only be broken in the UK".

The scale of the defeat, a margin of 149 against the Brexit plan she'd agreed with the European Union, has left Mrs May with no immediate way of pressing ahead with her deal.

"I think it is still alive, I do", Ms Truss told BBC Radio 4's PM.

"Not for us, not for Britain and certainly not for our citizens", he said.

Germany's foreign minister said the U.K. Parliament's rejection of the Brexit deal was "reckless".

Should we spring forward?
The study found positive effects in a number of industries but didn't go so far as to recommend making the change. The vote comes as more than two dozen states are considering measures to avoid the twice-yearly clock change.

The agreement was resoundingly voted down in January on the issue of the "backstop" is meant to avoid a hard border between Ireland (EU state) and Northern Ireland (part of UK), but many see it as an EU ploy to keep in the United Kingdom within the customs union and the single market.

But the Prime Minister warned if the deal - which has already been twice rejected by massive majorities - is not approved, a longer extension will be needed, requiring Britain to take part in the European Parliament elections in May. The discussion on Article 50 is done and dusted.

Former minister Edward Leigh said: "You may not like the deal, it's not ideal, but it delivers Brexit and let's go for it".

"That is the question we need a clear answer to now".

Mrs May clinched legally binding Brexit assurances from the bloc in a last-ditch attempt to win over rebellious British MPs who have threatened to vote down her divorce deal again.

During Tuesday's vote, 391 members of the House of Commons voted against the deal, while 242 supported it.

Supporters say it allows Britain to control immigration and take advantage of global opportunities, striking new trade deals with the United States and others while keeping close links to the European Union, which, even without Britain, would be a single market of 440 million people.

Independent Group MP Anna Soubry told the Commons: "It's a shameful carry-on when a former chairman of the Conservative Party is whipped against to the extent she will not push that amendment to the vote".

Elsewhere, Prime Minister of Spain Pedro Sanchez tweeted: "We regret the decision of the British Parliament despite the EU's effort to achieve the best agreement".

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn yet again blasted May for failing to find a "compromise solution" on Brexit, while lauding the efforts of his own party to do so.
