Don't panic... But Facebook and Instagram are down

Thomas Trutschel

Social media users in the UAE and other parts of the world were left frustrated on Wednesday evening when Facebook and Instagram went down.

People have taken to Twitter to share their frustration of not being able to access the websites and apps.

'We're aware that some people are now having trouble accessing the Facebook family of apps, ' the firm Tweeted about two hours into the outage.

Service continues to be disrupted on Facebook's main app, Messsenger, Instagram and Whatsapp. Instagram was worse: posts weren't loading, Instagram Stories were down, and direct messages and the button to post new content were also not working.

According to DownDetector, it looks like the outages are mainly in New England; Texas; Seattle, Washington; parts of Latin America, including Peru; the UK; India; and the Philippines.

While Facebook users tend to freak out at even the smallest problems, the current outage is much, much longer than usual.

Crew Dragon departs ISS and returns to Earth
The Atlantic Ocean landing is the first in almost 50 years for a capsule that was designed for humans, NASA says. SpaceX's recovery ship headed out to pull the Dragon onto its "nest" and bring it back to shore for inspection.

The company says they haven't found any signs that the outage is linked to any DDoS attack that was speculated to happen earlier today.

While the problems at the other two social networks are rather similar, WhatsApp users are expecting a slightly different set of issues. Popping over to Facebook.com won't give users an option to login, and instead will display a mostly blank screen, often calling out error code 2.

A short time later, Facebook indicated the outage was not related to an attack aimed at overwhelming the network.

"White moms complaining to their internet providers about Facebook not working thinking that their Internet isn't working because they needed to post another "live laugh love" quote", one person joked.

We've reached out to the company for more information on the source of the current problems, and will update if we hear back.
