Brie Larson Is a Superheroine Breaking Free From a Life Following Orders

Review: 'Captain Marvel' gets an average introduction

Unlike many a Marvel superhero movie, though, "Captain Marvel" doesn't feel overstuffed, clocking in under two hours if you don't count the credits, with the requisite pair of mid-credits extra scenes. It's less about learning to master new powers than it is about learning to accept already being powerful.

A slow-motion explosion in a barren landscape sends Brie Larson flying to the ground, blue blood running from her nose.

"My style is going to be different - sometimes its super flows and feminine, sometimes its really hard and tough, sometimes I want to wear a suit, sometimes I want to wear something baggy", she said.

There's no gawking down the lens at her curves, there's barely a trace of sexual tension, and no innuendo.

Ms. Danvers has no such luck, and Larson - an Oscar-winner whose natural protectiveness is poorly served by such a self-satisfied character - has little to do beyond mug for the camera and spout third-rate one-liners to any of the men who get in her way.

But it boasts some solid bones and excellent casting.

China blocks canola shipments from Canada's Richardson
There had already been reports last month that Canadian canola shipments to China had been slow to clear customs amid the dispute. The lawyer for a senior executive of Chinese tech giant Huawei arrested in Canada said comments by U.S.

The film begins like a sci-fi noir: she greets the dawn alone in a small apartment overlooking a city of concrete towers and floating traffic having barely slept, beset by yet another nightmare of a deeply buried yet vague trauma. "The casting news is paired with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige's positive sentiments about LGBT-inclusion during last year's publicity tour for Ant Man and the Wasp", notes Esquire, a reference to Feige reassuring LGBT fans that a gay superhero was indeed "in the works", as the Daily Wire reported in June. "I'm excited to share her with the world". Emotions and heart don't seem to have anything to do with her decisions. She's got those in spades. The film embodies what 90's pop culture meant to those who haven't seen it represented much on screen in the way that nostalgia for 80's and before have for folks of those generations.

Lynch said the film marked a "really special moment to be able to represent women and people of color in such a positive light".

Elsewhere, Showbiz Junkies' Rebecca Murray praises the film for its humour, and for the onscreen rapport between Brie Larson's titular Captain, and a digitally de-aged Samuel Jackson as a scrappy young Nick Fury. (Hint: It has the highest concentration of pubs outside the Trappist system.) It's also where she happens to crash-land after a tussle with a race of shapeshifters called the Skrulls. That opening sets up the film's otherworldliness, its personal mystery - what is happening in that memory? - and above all, its action. Larson's performance as Captain Marvel lives in how even as she's fighting to understand her untapped potential, she rises to face the challenges ahead over and over again. It is also about how someone can make peace with her past and realize that her true power actually comes from within.

"It's war", someone offers by way of sympathy. Captain Marvel and her alter ego, Carol Danvers, both have long histories within the Marvel Universe (and, indeed, the DC universe, with their version also an alias of the star of forthcoming film Shazam).

But what lingers most in the film's final moments is not the fog of war, but a vision of friendship and solidarity.

This is a book about women working together to remove the boundaries in their way. On Tuesday, Rotten Tomatoes tweeted that Captain Marvel was sitting at an 87 percent Tomatometer score, based on 93 reviews.
