Poland arrests Huawei exec, 1 other for spying

Hmmm: Huawei exec arrested for espionage in Poland

"Some European governments and telecom companies are following the U.S. lead in questioning whether using Huawei for vital infrastructure for mobile networks could leave them exposed to snooping by the Chinese government". Spokesman Wojciech Jabczynski declined to comment on Huawei cooperation but confirmed that the Warsaw-based company handed over an employee's belongings to the authorities.

On Friday, Poland arrested a Chinese Huawei employee on spying allegations, but a spokesman for Polish security services said the allegations relate to the individual's actions and are not directly related to the company.

TVP reports that the Polish national, "Piotr D" was a former high-ranking member of Poland's internal security agency (AWB).

The Huawei arrest saga continues as another Huawei employee faces up to 10 years in jail after a recent arrest in Poland.

"Huawei has always abided by applicable laws and regulations of the country where it is located... and requires all employees to abide by the country's laws and regulations", it said.

Last year, The Australian newspaper reported officials in the land "Down Under" had received reports about Chinese spies using Huawei to infiltrate a "foreign network".

Huawei, which also makes smartphones and other consumer devices, issued a statement from its Chinese headquarters saying it was aware of the situation in Poland and was looking into it.

The Chinese foreign ministry said it is "greatly concerned" by the arrests and has urged Poland to act justly. From 2006, he worked at the Chinese consulate in Gdansk before starting work at Huawei in 2011 and taking over responsibility for the company's public relations in Poland.

The arrest comes just over a month after Canada detained Meng on a U.S. extradition request, a move that infuriated China, which warned Canada of "serious consequences".

Most of Canada's allies in the Five Eyes intelligence alliance have banned the Chinese telco from their emerging 5G networks, the next evolution in wireless internet technology.

Poland's TVP Info reported that ABW agents searched both Orange and Huawei's offices on Tuesday, having received court approval last week.

Norway came out against Huawei on Wednesday (9 December), as Justice Minister Tor Mikkel Wara disclosed that the country is considering excluding the Chinese firm from investing in the next generation of mobile communications (5G).

The arrests will no doubt be seen as an escalation in the tit-for-tat detention of employees between China and western countries like Canada and the USA since December 1, 2018.

But unlike Meng, who was detained for possible extradition to the U.S., Wang is suspected of conducting espionage against Poland.

Shortly after this news, several other countries followed suit, including New Zealand, with the GCSB blocking Huawei's 5G infrastructure plans in the country.
