Ottawa: Three dead, at least 23 injured after double-decker hits bus shelter

A bus crash at Westboro Station in Ottawa

Three people were killed and 23 injured when a double-decker city bus struck a transit shelter in Ottawa on Friday afternoon, Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson says.

Local news stations report that at least seven of the injured are in critical condition.

He was in his apartment across the street from the station when he started hearing sirens just after 4 p.m.

The Ottawa Hospital tweeted Saturday morning that one patient is now under treatment in critical condition, six patients are in serious condition and four patients are in stable condition following Friday's crash. Bilal Gill sat in his own words, in the rear part of the upper floor, when the Bus suddenly came to a Lurching and shortly thereafter, the rammed. This meant ongoing road closures and detours in the surrounding area.

Investigators are still working to identify the victims of the crash, police said.

Rivett-Carnac said that the first responders seemed "cool, calm and collected" as they worked "quite systematically to gain access to the passengers on the top (of) the bus".

However China's state-run Global Times newspaper appeared to reveal the birth year of the North Korean leader in a tweet. In a New Year's speech, Kim warned Washington the country might be forced to take an alternative path if the U.S.

"Most of the serious injuries were on the upper-right side of the bus", Bordeleau said.

While the scene is expected to be released Saturday night, Bordeleau said it would be up to the City of Ottawa and OC Transpo as to when the transit station will be re-opened, given the damage to the structure.

"Please keep victims, witnesses, families and our unbelievable first responders in your thoughts".

Those who have pictures or video of the crash are being asked to get in touch with police, while passengers on the bus missing property are also asked to reach out.

Politicians, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Ontario Premier Doug Ford, tweeted messages of support.

This is the second deadly collision involving a double-decker bus in Ottawa in the last six years. The investigation into that case found the cause was a combination of excessive speed, a hard curve before the tracks and driver distraction.
