Two Huawei employees arrested in Poland over spying allegations

The company said that it did not know if the investigation was linked to the employee’s professional work

The Wall Street Journal reports that a Huawei executive has been arrested in Poland after being discovered as a spy for the Chinese government.

Britain's largest mobile provider BT said last month it would remove Huawei equipment from its cellular network after the foreign intelligence service called the company a security risk.

The two men were arrested on Tuesday, according to Polish state television TVP. Last year, Huawei helped Orange Polska to roll out its next-generation 5G mobile networks in the country.

"A Pole and a Chinese citizen have been arrested on suspicion of spying".

News of the executive's arrest comes amid speculation that Beijing is using Huawei to spy on USA companies as they build out the world's next generation of mobile-telecom networks. They have been charged with espionage under the Polish Criminal Code. Further indictments are expected, he said.

"It's not the beginning of this case but it's also not the end", he said.

Both men's homes had also been searched during the investigation. The man, who went by the Polish first name Stanislaw, also worked at the Chinese consulate in the past.

The Chinese national, Wang Weijing, works for Huawei, according to a source with knowledge of the case. The Chinese national is a sales director while the Polish is a former high-ranking official at Poland's internal security agency.

In mid-August, Washington enacted legislation banning U.S. government agencies from using Huawei products amid concerns that the company's mobile phones "pose an unacceptable risk to the [Pentagon's] personnel, information and mission".

NPR reports that this isn't a case of industrial espionage, either.

Huawei has come under global scrutiny lately. Extradition to the United States has already begun for a warrant alleging sanctions violations in trade with Iran.

Huawei said in a statement: "We are aware of the situation, and we are looking into it". The company said it abides by applicable laws wherever it operates and expects employees to do the same.

China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that it was "highly concerned" about the arrests. They also arrested a Polish employee of the local subsidiary of European communications giant Orange. Spokesman Wojciech Jabczynski declined to comment on Huawei cooperation but confirmed that the Warsaw-based company handed over an employee's belongings to the authorities. The US alleges that its chief financial officer, Meng Wanzhou, conspired to defraud banks to unwittingly clear transactions linked to Iran.
