Elizabeth Warren Blitzes Iowa With Populist Message

Warren cracked open a beer while discussing her'kind of an amazing day

If there's a message from the vibrant crowds, it's that Iowa Democrats are far from tired of an impending 2020 campaign, despite a bruising midterm election fight.

KHALID: The thing is, even though Iowans make their choice first, they're not necessarily representative of what Democrats across the country want.

Warren will have the chance to forge more personal connections with the state's activists and powerbrokers, starting Saturday with about 20 Democratic activists at a private home in central Iowa and Sunday at a Des Moines cafe. She has not campaigned there in years, and while her economic message may resonate with voters, she may find some discomfort with her willingness to tangle so openly with the president and other Republicans. "I lost my voice when I first ran for the Senate, so there you go". Warren is the first major candidate to visit the state this political season. She announced earlier this week an Iowa team that already includes Emily Parcell, then-Sen. And so she's been talking a lot more about her childhood in Oklahoma, how her dad had a heart attack.

For someone known for her ability to rouse crowds with her takedowns of Wall Street and Trump, Warren ignited her audience in Iowa by promising, in her trademark style, to "persist".

KHALID: And, Michel, really that is kind of the crux that we've been hearing from her in Iowa. For the remaining time, she answered questions from audience members. She wants "to strengthen our unions, our workers and our consumers" while breaking the hold of an "army of lobbyists" occupying the capital, as she describes it, under the banners of "big corporations".

Bounding onto stage in a packed building in Des Moines's trendy East Village, Senator Elizabeth Warren of MA waved to the crowd before speaking in a strained voice. Tom Steyer, a liberal billionaire from California, is also considering a run for president and will travel to the caucus and primary states of Iowa, New Hampshire and Nevada early this year. And the two of them have had some notable scuffles, particularly on Twitter.

Elizabeth Warren embarked on a four-city tour in Iowa over the weekend after announcing she was launching an exploratory committee for president. These are over her claims of native ancestry.

Before the midterm elections, Warren sought to put the issue to rest by having a DNA test performed on her. For a party looking for fresh leadership, she's a throwback to the Baby Boomer generation. And I like that, retired Sioux City teacher Colleen Sernett-Shadle said. A question was asked by a woman in the crowd to Elizabeth Warren.

The questioner pressed Warren, though, on how deeply the "helpful" and "transparent" DNA test cut into her campaign, noting to Warren that President Donald Trump used Warren's announcement, last week, of forming her exploratory committee, to distract from issues dogging the White House, including immigration and an ongoing government shutdown.

"Now I can't stop Donald Trump from what he's gonna do, I can't stop him from hurling racial insults", Warren said. "Tribes - and only tribes - determine tribal citizenship, and I respect that difference". One of the first top-tier contenders to enter what figures to be one of the most crowded fields for Democrats in some time, Warren is aiming to lay down her marker as its resident economic populist and pitch herself as the ultimate fighter for the middle class.

"There are too many people who get their power from turning working people against working people", the Massachusetts Democrat said a day later in Storm Lake during a riff on long-stalled talks over comprehensive immigration revisions.

'I can't stop Donald Trump from what he's going to do, ' Warren said.
