Actor Kevin Spacey’s bid to avoid appearing in Massachusetts court denied

Kevin Spacey

The actor has been nearly entirely out of the public eye as he has faced allegations of sexual misconduct, including a criminal charge for allegedly sexually assaulting an 18-year-old man at a Nantucket bar in 2016.

In documents obtained by TMZ, Spacey's attorneys said that appearing in court would "amplify the negative publicity already generated in connection with the case".

But, according to news reports, Spacey was photographed in public twice this weekend, once with his face partially obscured as he got into a auto.

Emails seeking comment on the judge's ruling were sent to Mr Spacey's attorneys and the district attorney's office handling the case.

Judge Thomas Barrett ordered Spacey to appear in a Nantucket, Massachusetts District Court on January 7th, according to Variety. Spacey's attorneys have also questioned the evidence against him.

If Spacey is found guilty of the charges he could serve up to five years in prison or 2.5-year term at a house of correction as well as added to the sex offender registry.

It was claimed the alleged victim told others of the incident at the time, but reportedly cited his embarrassment having been "sexually assaulted by a famous person".

Neither Mr Spacey nor his lawyers have addressed the allegation publicly, but the actor released a video last week in the voice of his House of Cards character, Frank Underwood, in which he said: "I'm certainly not going to pay the price for the thing I didn't do".

Star Trek actor Anthony Rapp came forward a year ago with allegations the Netflix star made unwanted sexual advances against him as a teenager.
