US Investigating CenturyLink Internet Outage, 911 Failures

The federal government is launching an investigation into the cause of a nationwide CenturyLink outage that has disrupted 911 service, including in the Wenatchee Valley, since Thursday into today.

Officials in Jefferson Co. told 13 NEWS they were receiving reports of outages in the area.

Local police and county sheriff's departments have been answering distressed users on social media for the past few hours, giving out direct phone numbers to their local dispatchers.

Problems stretched in severity from knocking out Washington State 911 service to blocking incoming calls to businesses, including The World-Herald.

The company first acknowledged the problem on Thursday morning.

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai called the outage "completely unacceptable" in a statement.

KOMO reports that some customers in Washington experienced busy signals when they attempted to dial 911.

Avangard weapon makes missile defences useless, Russian Federation says
He added that the new weapon "essentially makes missile defenses useless". He further emphasized no other country had hypersonic weapons .

That statement was followed up with a Facebook post around 8:45 a.m. Friday morning.

Widespread outages across the country have been reported since earlier Thursday morning.

CenturyLink Inc., one of the nation's largest telecom providers, said a technical problem led to failed 911 calls made by cellphones in many parts of the country.

CenturyLink said in a tweet about 10:45 p.m. that "engineers have identified a network element that was impacting customer services and are addressing the issue in order to fully restore services".

Colorado: The nationwide outages led to dropped 911 calls in northern Colorado as well, according to The Greeley Tribune.

CRESA is the Clark County Regional Emergency Services Agency, charged with providing 911 services for the area.

Brian Fontes, CEO of the National Emergency Numbers Association says that while small, localized 911 outages are fairly common and quickly repaired, outages affecting a large enough population to prompt an FCC investigation are not.
