Donald Trump visits US troops in Iraq for first trip to a conflict zone

At long last, President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania paid a visit to USA troops stationed overseas, after a secret overnight flight to Iraq.

While meeting with USA troops, Trump defended his decision to pull soldiers out of Syria, but said the United States military presence in Iraq would remain.

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday acknowledged he had security concerns about visiting Iraq, saying it was "pretty sad" that he needed such secrecy to see US troops.

"What was supposed to pass for a face-saving story - that Trump refused to meet the PM in Baghdad insisting that the meeting take place at the Ain Al-Asad base - was viewed by many Iraqis as further proof of Trump's contempt for Iraq", said Fanar Haddad, an Iraq expert at the National University of Singapore's Middle East Institute.

In a statement, it said: "A disagremeent over how to conduct the meeting led to the meeting being replaced by a telephone conversation".

After the brief visit, when Air Force One had left Iraqi airspace, Trump posted a video on his Twitter feed.

Sanders emphasised that President Trump and the prime minister had a good call and that Trump invited the prime minister to visit the White House and the prime minister accepted.

Qais Khazali, the head of the Iran-backed Asaib Ahl al-Haq militia that fought key battles against IS in north Iraq, promised on Twitter that Parliament would vote to expel USA forces from Iraq, or the militias would force them out by "other means".

First lady Melania Trump was on the trip.

Trump began by laying out that he had "no plans at all" to reduce the substantial US presence in Iraq and underscored his willingness to launch more military operations in the future.

'I don't recall another time where special operation forces had to pose with their faces visible while serving in a war zone, ' the official said.

Still, the USA and Iraq developed considerable military and intelligence ties in the war against IS, and they continue to pay dividends in operations against militants gone into hiding.

While President Trump is pulling troops out of Syria and Afghanistan, much to the disliking of his critics, Iraqi leadership is instead angry at the President for doing just the opposite - leaving troops in their country.

Shiite movement Harakat al-Nujaba said the presence of U.S. forces in Iraq was a "violation of the country´s sovereignty" and it was "now the duty of the government to expel American forces".

Trump said the mission in Syria was to remove ISIS from its strongholds and not to be a nation-builder, which he said was a job for other wealthy countries.

He said: "If they want us to do the fighting, they also have to pay a price - and sometimes that's also a monetary price - so we're not the suckers of the world".

The way in which Trump visited was "not commensurate with diplomatic norms and relations with sovereign states", Abadi said.

New Delhi, with billions of dollars in developmental investment, also banks on the US-led global coalition forces for much of its reconstruction effort in the country, which started years ago on the watch of president George W Bush and continue through president Barack Obama's tenure to president Trump. Al-Sadr's lawmakers now form the core of the Islah bloc, which is headed by al-Saidi in Parliament. Sadr has long opposed the American presence in Iraq since the US-led invasion toppled Saddam Hussein in 2003.

Air Force One, lights out and window shutters drawn, flew overnight from Washington, landing at an airbase west of Baghdad in darkness Wednesday evening. The US presence there was never meant to be "open-ended", he added.
