Facebook gave more than 150 companies special access to your data

150+ companies thrived on Facebook user data under secretive ‘partnership’ deals – reports

The partner companies could also reportedly view all users' friends, names, contact information and streams of friends' posts.

Satterfield also said that Facebook had made errors in its handling of these partnerships, which allowed continued use of data after the formal agreements had ended, and that it was now working to terminate many of them.

Under the settlement, Facebook agreed to get consent from users before sharing their data with third parties.

The Times late Tuesday reported that some 150 companies - including powerful partners like Amazon, Microsoft, Netflix, and Spotify - could access detailed information about Facebook users, including messages and data about their friends.

The report specifically alleges that multiple businesses were allowed to access the private Facebook messages of Canadian users.

Warner, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee that heard testimony from Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg in September, has previously put forth several potential measures for regulating tech companies.

Facebook denied allowing its partners to ignore people's privacy settings and said "it's wrong to suggest that they do".

The paper reported that Facebook allowed Microsoft's Bing search engine to see the names of virtually all Facebook users' friends without their consent, citing documents from 2017.

Trump says Cohen did low-level work for him, mostly PR
Cohen pleaded guilty to two counts of campaign finance violations which Trump can argue did not involve campaign finance. The campaign finance violations for which Cohen faces punishment have raised questions about Trump's own legal exposure.

"Amazon uses APIs provided by Facebook in order to enable Facebook experiences for our products", the spokesperson said. First, people could access their Facebook accounts or specific Facebook features on devices and platforms built by other companies like Apple, Amazon, Blackberry and Yahoo.

Although many companies are listed in the piece, it's Netflix and Spotify that have been highlighted as being able to access, and even delete, private messages. The partners were prohibited from using the personal information for other purposes, he said.

Moreover, if media companies like The Times are potentially being granted special access to things like private Facebook messages, are reporters privy to this kind of information?

Steve Satterfield, director of privacy and public policy at Facebook, said in a statement to The Post that the partnerships do not violate their users' privacy.

Whether aware or not, The Times reasons that the documents "raise questions about whether Facebook ran afoul of a 2011 consent agreement with the Federal Trade Commission [FTC] that barred the social network from sharing user data without explicit permission".

The social network has been under intense pressure over its practices over the a year ago, following the Cambridge Analytica scandal, a series data breaches and concerns over fake news and other content on the site.

As Facebook has battled one crisis after another, the company's critics, including some former advisers and employees, have singled out the data-sharing as cause for concern. The agency said in March it was looking into whether Facebook engaged in unfair acts that might have violated the decree.
