Apple will splash out $1 billion on new Austin campus

Apple plans to create 20,000 new jobs in the U.S. by 2023

The company said it will also hire thousands more engineers in several other emerging high-tech hotbeds. Its other offices in Seattle, San Diego, and Los Angeles will host almost 1,000 workers initially. More than 90,000 Americans are now employed by the tech giant across the country.

Unlike tech rival Amazon, Apple did not hold a public bidding process to choose the site of its new campus. The new Vancouver space, adjacent to a cluster of new Amazon offices, is expected to become a new major corporate office that could potentially employ as many as 1,000 people.

"Austin has always been among one of America's top knowledge and talent clusters so that's not surprising", Florida said. "Companies that can find the workers they need elsewhere often do". The city of Austin is offering no incentives. Apple will receive up to $25 million from a jobs creation fund in Texas in addition to property tax rebates that still need approval. Amazon (AMZN) eventually chose NY and northern Virginia, where it could add as many as 50,000 jobs. Washington, D.C., ranked as the third best place in North America for tech talent, behind Silicon Valley and Seattle. But Austin does represent the largest new investment.

Today Apple announced a major expansion of its operations within the United States which includes one brand new campus, three new sites, and a larger presence across several cities. The new campus will be near its existing facility in the North Austin area.

Emailed bomb threats made to police departments, businesses across New Mexico
The sender of the emails claimed they had an accomplice who had planted a small explosive device in the building. Massachusetts State Police said officers were tracking multiple bomb threats emailed to "numerous businesses".

Apple makes much of its green credentials; all of its data centres have run on 100 per cent renewable energy since 2013.

Its new Austin campus will be located less than a mile away from its existing facilities, Apple said. Apple has since come a long way, with 6,200 jobs at present. E-commerce giant Amazon Inc. recently revealed plans to build a major new campus in NY, while Google has opened new offices in sites including Boulder, Colorado.

Apple plans to create 20,000 new jobs in the U.S.by 2023. In total, Apple plans to increase its workforce in the US from 90,000 to 110,000 by 2023.

No mention was made of Raleigh or Research Triangle Park, although the news release did say there was the "potential for additional expansion elsewhere in the United States over time". Calls and emails have been placed with the company requesting more information. They also come as the trade war with China intensifies although it's still unlikely that iPhone manufacturing will move to the U.S.
