China slams ‘inhumane’ treatment of Huawei executive, says Canada violates her rights

Huawei Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou is fighting to be released on bail after she was arrested on December 1 in Vancouver at the request of the United States. "China will take further action based on the USA actions".

China has lashed out at what it described as the "inhumane" treatment of Huawei Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou who was earlier detained in Canada.

She was arrested last week while changing flights in Vancouver and is awaiting possible extradition to the U.S.

Meng is reportedly suspected of trying to evade United States trade sanctions on Iran. Banks in the U.S. cleared money for Huawei, but unbeknownst to these financial firms, they were conducting business with Skycom in contravention of the sanctions, the lawyer said.

China has summoned the Canadian ambassador to protest the detention of a top executive of leading Chinese tech giant Huawei, calling it "unreasonable, unconscionable, and vile in nature" and warning of "grave consequences" if she is not released.

During a bail hearing Friday, Meng's lawyer told the court she has strong ties to Vancouver and her two properties, worth a total of $14 million, could be put up for bail.

"It seems that the Canadian detention facility is not offering her the necessary health care", the Global Times said, adding the Huawei executive had surgery in May to remove her thyroid gland and is now suffering from high blood pressure.

She allegedly assured USA banks that Huawei and Skycom were different companies but prosecutors say they were one and the same. Ms. Meng explained that Huawei's engagement with Skycom was part of normal business operations and that Huawei had sold the shares it once held in Skycom.

The economic adviser said he could not guarantee that Meng won't be released as part of ongoing USA trade talks with Beijing.

Even before Huawei's Meng Wanzhou was arrested last week in Canada, the company was the talk of the town.

Meng was arrested the same day that presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping agreed to a 90-day trade war truce.

The VPD said no one was injured and no arrests have been made.

While he was prime minister, Harper said his government was increasingly concerned "about the penetration of Huawei and ZTE", another Chinese telecom company, into the telecommunication networks of democratic countries.

U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, speaking Sunday on CBS' "Face the Nation", downplayed the impact of the arrest.

Ms. Meng, who spent the weekend in jail, is scheduled to have a court hearing resume Monday.

The statement warned that Beijing would make an unspecified "further response" in light of the United States actions.

Canadian officials have declined to comment on Chinese threats of retaliation over the case, instead emphasizing the independence of Canada's judiciary along with the importance of Ottawa's relationship with Beijing.

Asked Monday what those steps might be, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said only that "it totally depends on the Canadian side itself".

Meanwhile, the Chinese Communist Party's official newspaper, The People's Daily, published an editorial blasting Canada for the arrest and warning its officials they could face "serious consequences" over the incident.
