Marielle Lindgren, chief executive of Ericsson UK and Ireland, said: "The faulty software that has caused these issues is being decommissioned". "We fully appreciate it's been a poor experience and we are really sorry".

The outage kicked off around 4.45am this morning, with services that rely on O2's network also suffering as a effect. "Our technical teams are working extremely hard to resolve this", the company said.

Tens of millions of smartphone users in Britain lost internet access today after a software glitch brought down O2's data network.

O2 United Kingdom chief executive Mark Evans said: "I want to let our customers know how sorry I am for the impact our network data issue has had on them".

In an online statement, O2 said: "We are aware our customers are unable to use data this morning".

Over in Japan, SoftBank said its outage extended from 1.39pm until 6.04pm JST on Thursday, with SoftBank and Y!mobile 4G LTE mobile phone services, Ouchi-No-Denwa fixed-line services, and SoftBank Air services affected.

For its part, the Israeli military denied any of its assets were hit, but stopped short of denying it had conducted strikes. It is not yet clear whether the S-300s were among the air defense systems used in the Thursday night counterattacks.

Other operators affected by the Ericsson software blip include Japanese operator SoftBank and GTA TeleGuam.

Companies that share O2's network - such as GiffGaff, Sky Mobile and Tesco Mobile - are also being hit by the problems.

Telefonica, the Spanish owner of O2, said more than 12 hours after the outage was noticed in London at around 5.00am that it had been assured by Ericsson that "full service will be restored for customers by (Friday) morning".

The fragility of the increasingly connected systems that keep modern, Western nations running was underlined Thursday when major telecoms network O2 ceased to transmit mobile data from around 0530 GMT.

Computing will update this story as soon more news comes in. Here is what business professionals and mobile users need to know about 5G networks.
