Huawei CFO arrested in Canada for reportedly violating United States sanctions against Iran

Huawei CFO Wanzhou Meng arrested in Vancouver, faces extradition to U.S.

Meng "was arrested in Vancouver on December 1", a statement by Canada's ministry of justice said.

The Canadian Justice Department arrested Wanzhou Meng in Vancouver on Saturday and USA officials want Canada to extradite her, agency representative Ian McLeod said in an email sent to Business Insider. "The ban was sought by Ms Meng".

Huawei, in a statement, said the arrest was made on behalf of the U.S.so Meng could be extradited to "face unspecified charges" in the Eastern District of NY. "The company believes the Canadian and US legal systems will ultimately reach a just conclusion".

Shenzhen-based Huawei is the latest Chinese tech firm to be targeted for violating US sanctions.

Back in April of this year, multiple reports described how United States authorities were investigating the possibility that Huawei had sold telecommunications equipment to Iran in violation of trade sanctions.

Canadian law enforcers have arrested a top executive at Chinese telecommunications equipment maker Huawei, heeding a request from the US.

The aim of the Justice Department's investigation is to prevent companies, such as Huawei and ZTE Corp. that may be answerable to the Chinese Communist Party, from gaining access into the US economy amid allegations of spying on its citizens.

U.S. media have reported that the United States is investigating Huawei for potential violations of USA sanctions against Iran.

The arrest comes as the USA has brought a number of legal cases against Chinese technology firms, with accusations such as cyber-security theft and violations of United States sanctions against Iran.

Washington pays respects to Bush as he lies in state at Capitol
US financial markets will also be closed on Wednesday to honor Bush , and the US Supreme Court postponed arguments . Bush in the 2000 presidential election, eventually dropping out of the race and giving her endorsement to Bush.

The Wall Street Journal reported in April that the Justice Department had launched a criminal probe into Huawei's dealings in Iran, following administrative subpoenas on sanctions-related issues from both the Commerce Department and the Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control.

The Chinese Embassy in Ottawa said her human rights were violated and demanded her immediate release.

Also in August, Australia banned the use of Huawei's equipment for new faster 5G, or fifth-generation, wireless networks in the country and New Zealand last week did the same, citing national security concerns.

In 2016, the Commerce Department sought information in regards to Huawei possibly sending USA technology to Syria and North Korea as well.

The Wall Street Journal notes that US authorities want to bring Meng to federal court in the Eastern District of NY.

The U.S.is anxious about the extent to which Chinese-made equipment is used in the telecommunications sectors of countries that host American military bases.

At least 13 pages of a proposal to sell Hewlett-Packard computer equipment to Iran were marked "Huawei confidential".

Huawei could not be reached for comment at the time of publication.
