AAR, NRF call on Congress to pass new North American trade agreement

Donald Trump says he'll terminate Nafta

U.S. President Donald Trump says he intends to tell Congress that he plans to terminate NAFTA in an effort to pressure lawmakers on Capitol Hill to approve its recently negotiated successor.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One while returning to Washington from Argentina, Trump said: "I will be formally terminating Nafta shortly".

Republicans will lose control of the U.S. House in January but will remain in control of the U.S. Senate.

U.S. Congress can suggest small changes to be made to the legislation, and many lawmakers have been waiting for an economic impact study from the U.S. International Trade Commission before making their final decision.

Trump has made renegotiating NAFTA a centerpiece of his presidency.

Trucks move almost $385 billion in goods between the US and Mexico, and $336 billion in trade between the USA and Canada.

The president also mentioned that he would hold off for a bit at the request of Congress due to President George H.W. Bush's passing.

Macron to meet Saudi crown prince in Argentina
Saudi Arabia was the second-largest purchaser of French arms between 2008 and 2017, with deals totalling more than $12.5bn. After initially saying he had left the consulate alive, Saudi Arabia admitted weeks later that he was killed there.

"As it stands, this agreement has not earned the support of America's working families", he said in a statement.

Lawmakers in both parties are still reviewing the details, and many are making no promises as they work to ensure exporters in their home states can thrive under the proposed trade ground rules. MacNaughton said Canadian diplomats will rev up their machine to lobby members of Congress for their support.

"It helped us get to where we are", MacNaughton said at a Public Policy Forum dinner in Ottawa. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, a leader on the issue, argued that there is precedent for reopening the agreement and making changes at this stage.

Throughout the start of his presidency, President Trump had repeatedly threatened to withdraw the United States from Nafta, unless he could secure a better deal.

The signing of the trade agreement is largely ceremonial as it will need to be ratified by all three countries before it can formally take effect.

"What isn't in it yet are enough enforcement reassurances regarding workers" and the environment, she told a press conference. He threatened to tear it up and withdraw the United States completely at times during the negotiation, which would have left trade between the three neighbors in disarray.

Rubio's office said Monday that the senator had asked Lightizer to look into additional trade actions to protect Florida growers, and that Lighthizer had committed to requesting a fact-finding investigation and taking corrective action.
