Trump vs the world _ G-20 summit stumbles on trade, climate

Riot police block an avenue

Speaking in Buenos Aires, U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said he would be surprised if the dinner was not a success, but it would depend entirely on the two presidents.

Beijing is looking to convince Trump to not rain tariffs on $200million (£156million) worth of Chinese goods from 10 percent to 25 percent in January.

Trump was typically coy on Friday even as he noted some positive signs.

But despite the administration's public posturing, the USA economy has been showing signs of strain as of late with a volatile stock market and an announcement from General Motors this week that the USA automaker is poised to lay off thousands of workers. United States stocks closed slightly higher on Friday on market hopes that a compromise could be reached by the two leaders. "Great family. And you're doing a fantastic job, and I want to congratulate you", he added. "But, frankly, I like the deal we have right now". "We'll see", he said.

Putin called for securing a nuclear deal with Iran, despite the United States withdrawal from the pact, to "prevent a new round of tensions over the Iranian nuclear program". China demands the United States stop sending ships and military aircraft close to islands Beijing claims in the South China Sea. "Way, way, way above my pay grade", he said.

On the eve of the summit, G20 member nations were still trying to reach agreement on major issues including trade, migration and climate change that in past years have been worked out well in advance.

Trump was supposed to sit later in the day with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who hosted last year's G20 and has withstood sustained attacks by Trump over auto imports and trade.

"Not just in various strategic co-operation but economically, and the people-to-people relationships, well, there's none better", he said.

Such a statement would endorse the Paris Agreement on climate change, the source said, after Trump yanked the United States out of the pact in the face of increasingly urgent warnings from scientists that action is needed now.

The president's economic adviser Larry Kudlow, in a briefing with reporters this week, similarly sought to make the case that the USA comes into the negotiations from a stronger bargaining position than China.

Moscow said US domestic politics may have been the real reason behind the cancellation after Trump's former personal lawyer pleaded guilty on Thursday to lying to Congress about a proposed Trump Organization skyscraper in the Russian capital.

The Saudi leader has been the subject of widespread condemnation after Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi was killed during a visit to the Saudi Arabian consulate in Turkey in October.

Reports also said British Prime Minister Theresa May told the prince in a meeting on the G20 sidelines that the killers of Khashoggi should be held to account and that Saudi Arabia should move to build confidence that such an incident would never happen again. The Saudi foreign ministry said the prince had meetings with his French, South Korean and Mexican counterparts.

Saudi Arabia maintains that the Crown Prince had no knowledge of the killing.

Economic troubles could spread much further if Trump goes through on a threat to impose auto tariffs on trading partners including Europe and Japan, the International Monetary Fund warned in a pre-G20 report.

In remarks to the summit relayed by the Xinhua news agency, Xi reaffirmed his pledges of economic reform "with increased efforts in intellectual property rights protection and more imports".

There are also questions about how to handle the awkward presence of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
