Former President George HW Bush dead at 94

Former President George H.W. Bush watches flight operations from the landing signal officer's platform aboard the aircraft carrier that bears his name USS George H.W. Bush

The statement concludes: "Our hearts ache with his loss, and we, with the American people, send our prayers to the entire Bush family, as we honor the life and legacy of 41".

George H.W. Bush was born on June 12, 1924, in MA, into a wealthy and politically active family. Being the youngest pilot in the navy when he began flying, he flew 58 combat missions during World War II and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for bravery in action.

Bush was president of the US from 1989-1993 and brought a "dedication to traditional American values" and a determination to make the USA a "kinder and gentler nation", according to a White House biography.

Following Mr Clinton's presidency, his son, George W Bush, served two terms as President with his first term taking place during the September 11 attacks.

He is the father of former President George W. Bush, who served two terms from 2001 through 2009. Reagan soon chose Bush as his running mate and vice presidential nominee.

In late 1989, Bush sent United States troops to Panama to oust strongman Manuel Noriega.

Saudi crown prince greeted by hundreds of protesters during Tunisia visit
In an apparent attempt to avoid embarrassing the prince, the presidency only invited photographers to cover his visit. Tunisia was a strong Saudi ally under Ben Ali but ties have since been strained at times.

He assembled a coalition of 32 nations to drive Iraqi forces out in a matter of weeks with a lightning air and ground assault.

However, once in office, he reneged on that promise and raised several taxes in an attempt to reduce the national budget deficit in a compromise deal with Congressional Democrats.

Four years later, however, Bush lost the presidency to Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton, although the two later became friends, occasionally dispatched by subsequent USA presidents to oversee assistance efforts after natural disasters.

Another son, Jeb - a former Florida governor - made an unsuccessful bid for the Republican nomination in 2016.

Only one other US president, John Adams, had a son who also became president.
