Kansas Democrat backs Pelosi bid for House speaker

Brindisi says he'll continue to oppose Pelosi for speaker, work with Trump when possible

Pelosi has given some rebelling members permission to vote against her in the caucus vote, which was conducted by private ballot, but expects them to vote "present" during the full floor vote, according to a Democratic lawmaker familiar with the discussions. The group was formed several years ago by the centrist organization No Labels, in part to blunt the power of ultraconservative Republicans who have had an outsize influence on their leaders during their years in the majority.

The race for Speaker of the House in Washington intensified again Wednesday with Rep. Nancy Pelosi winning the nomination to be Speaker beginning in January.

Pelosi critic Representative Kathleen Rice said on Tuesday that while the rebels could not stop Pelosi from getting the Democratic caucus' nomination for speaker at a closed-door party meeting on Wednesday, they could block her election on January 3 when Pelosi must win a majority of the whole House, both Republicans and Democrats, to become speaker.

"I am saying the same thing that I said during the campaign", Brindisi said.

Some had touted her as a potential successor to Pelosi, but Bass announced this month that she was supporting Pelosi and focusing on her CBC bid instead. Pelosi became a face of the Affordable Care Act she helped pass through Congress, and in 2010 Democrats lost a historic number of seats in the House.

House Democrats tapped Nancy Pelosi on Wednesday as the party's nominee for speaker - but the political powerhouse is still fighting to lock down enough support to secure the gavel in January's floor vote as some Democrats call for new leadership. Some who opposed her Wednesday could still flip to support her on the floor.

Winter Storm Bruce Heads East After Dumping Snow Throughout Midwest
The National Weather Service warned residents to take care as the winter storm continues to batter states throughout Monday. Kansas City International Airport got 5.3 inches of snow, and at least 7 inches of snow was reported in Rockford, Illinois.

On Wednesday, Ms Pelosi, 78, won with a simple majority in a secret ballot by House Democrats.

In their first leadership vote, House Democrats selected New York's Hakeem Jeffries over California's Barbara Lee for caucus chair, the No. 5 position. "We need real rules reform to get bipartisan legislation heard - not just more committees to study the problem".

Nancy Pelosi is picking up support from nine holdouts as House Democrats meet to nominate her as speaker in the new Congress.

"Leader Pelosi wants to boil this down to a personal argument, but this is so much bigger than her", Moulton told the Washington Post in a statement. By the end, she had promised that his two top legislative priorities - a bill to allow people older than 50 to buy in to Medicare and a $1 trillion infrastructure measure - would be top agenda items in the next Congress.

"We all agree that history is in a hurry, and we need to accelerate the pace of change in Congress, ' she wrote, noting the 'historic" class of new first-term lawmakers, the largest since Watergate, who led Democrats to the majority in the midterm election.

Mr. Jeffries said the caucus will be "member-driven" and focus "like a laser beam" on making sure they have a successful two years. With so little time left, Hayes said, "there are no other options". She held that office until January 2011. Democrats will control 234 seats in the House, meaning she can lose just 16 Democratic votes. Votes were still being counted, but she was assured of victory.
