NASA spacecraft InSight lands on Mars to dig deep

The Mars In Sight Lander

"MarCO was there to relay information back from InSight in real time, and we did that extraordinarily well", said Andy Klesh, MarCO chief engineer, at a press conference at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory here November 26 two hours after the InSight landing.

Cheers and applause erupted at NASA´s Jet Propulsion Laboratory on Monday as a waist-high unmanned lander, called InSight, touched down on Mars, capping a almost seven-year journey from design to launch to landing.

A team of engineers, nervously hunched over computer screens, erupted in cheers as they received confirmation that InSight had made it to the alien planet, which is roughly 55 million kilometres or 34 million miles away from Earth.

The two satellites not only transmitted the good news in nearly real time, they also sent back InSight's first snapshot of Mars just 4 minutes after landing. Better photos are expected in the days ahead, after the dust covers come off.

"Today, we successfully landed on Mars for the eighth time in human history", NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said. NASA's Curiosity rover, which arrived in 2012, is still on the move on Mars. "This image is really our farewell to InSight, our wish for good luck and a farewell for Mars itself as we continue on said Andrew Klesh, the chief engineer for the CubeSats". "Sometimes things work out in your favor".

A second instrument, furnished by Germany's space agency, consists of a drill to burrow as much as 16 feet (5 meters) underground, pulling behind it a rope-like thermal probe to measure heat flowing from inside the planet. The lander also has a French seismometer for measuring quakes, if they exist on our smaller, geologically calmer neighbor.

These instruments include the Seismic Experiment for Interior Structures to investigate what causes the seismic waves on Mars the Heat Flow and Physical Properties Package to burrow beneath the surface and determine heat flowing out of the planet and the Rotation and Interior Structure Experiment to use radios to study the planet's core. "But even after landing, we'll need to be patient for the science to begin", Bruce Banerdt of JPL, InSight's principal investigator, said, according to the NASA statement. This spot is open, flat safe and boring, which is what the scientists want for a stationary two-year mission.

"We hit the Martian atmosphere at 12,300 miles per hour, and the whole sequence to touching down on the surface took only 6½ minutes", Hoffman said. The danger was that the spacecraft could burn up in the atmosphere or bounce off it. But the quick look at the surroundings showed a flat surface with few if any rocks - just what scientists were hoping for. Project manager Tom Hoffman said the spacecraft landed close to the bull's-eye, but NASA did not have yet have the final calculations. Well, humanity's latest probe to the Martian surface isn't just interested in rocks and molecules. All but one of the previous USA touchdowns were successful.

Viewings of the televised activity inside the JPL control room were held coast to coast at museums, planetariums and libraries, as well as New York's Times Square.

"It's going to be awesome".

All of this comes out over the next year or so on Mars. Mars stopped changing, while Earth continued to evolve.

InSight will spend 24 months - about one Martian year - collecting a wealth of data to unlock mysteries about how formed and, by extension, the origins of the Earth and other rocky planets of the inner solar system.

InSight has no life-detecting capability, however. NASA's Mars 2020 mission, for instance, will collect rocks that will eventually be brought back to Earth and analyzed for evidence of ancient life.
