Mexican officials question use of force at the border

Central American migrants are stopped by Mexican police forces as they reach the El Chaparral border crossing in Tijuana Baja California State Mexico

Forty two people were arrested after a group of migrants in Tijuana, the Mexican city, broke away from a peaceful protest and ran towards the border fencing on Sunday.

But by day's end, the fortified Tijuana-San Diego border crossing was temporarily shuttered as USA border agents and police lobbed tear gas projectiles at migrants, including young children and women on the Mexican side of the border, sparking widespread panic.

The US president's threat comes a day after American authorities closed the country's busiest southern border crossing and fired tear gas into crowds.

However, reports have emerged migrants using bottles and other missiles to attack agents.

"[CBP] effectively managed an extremely unsafe situation involving over 1,000 individuals who sought to enter the United States unlawfully in large groups".

Many users on social media debated whether tear gas is a chemical weapon, and if it is, why was it used against migrants? Mexico's Interior Department said about 500 migrants were involved in the attempt to rush the border, while US authorities put the number at 1,000.

Francisco Vega, the governor of Baja California, said nearly 9,000 migrants were in the state - mainly in Tijuana, with a lesser number in Mexicali - and called it "an issue of national security".

About 5,000 Central American migrants have been staying at a sports center in Tijuana for more than a week.

"On the other side, unfortunately, I can not agree on the use of force, not even that type of force that is tear gas or rubber bullets", Mayor Juan Manuel Gastelum said.

He wrote on Twitter, "Mexico should move the flag waving Migrants, many of whom are stone cold criminals, back to their countries".

The shutdown took place only three days after Trump threatened to close the "whole border" with Mexico if "it gets to a level where we're going to lose control or people are going to start getting hurt".

Trump wants migrants to remain in Mexico while their U.S. asylum cases are adjudicated.

Alyssa Milano, Kathy Griffin, and Rosie O'Donnell slammed President Trump after Sunday's border clash. One woman is seen running with her children, grasping the wrists of one child in each hand, at least one dressed in a diaper as they escape the tear gas. With a backlog of cases that number into the thousands, many migrants appear set to linger along the border for months, if not longer.

Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen defended her agency's use of tear gas, saying that the migrants threw "projectiles" at U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials.

"That's where, in many ways, the Republicans have owned the framing of this issue, because they have framed this issue as a national security issue", Wane said. He questioned why parents were approaching the border with children at all, suggesting that some of the adults "grabbed" children to better their chances of entering the US.
