Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez - the 29-year-old socialist who became a media darling over the summer after beating a 10-term NY incumbent in the Democratic primary - is headed to the U.S. House of Representatives with a resounding victory in Tuesday's general election, Yahoo News reported.

MA and CT will also send black women to Congress as firsts for their states, while Arizona and Tennessee are getting their first female senators.

She ran alongside Republican Rep. Ron DeSantis, who beat Democrat Andrew Gillum in a high profile race that was one of the most closely watched nationally.

The elections saw the Democrats take the House of Representatives, with a majority of 222 reps so far.

These new records represent the culmination of a record-setting year for female candidates.

For the first time, a pair of Native American congresswomen are headed to the House, in addition to two Muslim congresswoman.

Michigan's Rashida Tlaib and Minnesota's Ilhan Omar are the country's first Muslim women in Congress. Ayanna Pressley is Massachusetts' first Black congresswoman.

VoteCast reported that more women voted for Democratic candidates than men. "Democrats took the House back because of women voters". About 6 in 10 voted for the Democrat in the race, compared with 4 in 10 for the Republican candidate. She became a progressive star after her upset primary victory over Republican Joseph Crowley, a high-ranking House Democrat.
