Saudi Arabia tells Turkey: we will prosecute Jamal Khashoggi murder suspects

Gina Haspel

Saudi Arabia's foreign minister has described the kingdom as a "vision of light" in the region as it tries to control the fallout from Jamal Khashoggi's killing - its biggest diplomatic crisis since the 9/11 attacks.

An official in Washington said US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had "raised the safety and security of the Khashoggi family members with the Saudi leadership", but declined to discuss the specifics of Salah's travel.

The fiancee of slain Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi has said she did not accept an invitation from US President Donald Trump to visit the White House because she thought it was aimed at influencing public opinion in his favour.

"Information from the Turkish side affirms that the suspects in Khashoggi's case premeditated their crime", said the statement carried by state TV.

President Trump was quick to point fingers at a "rogue" element inside the Saudi government.

Saudi authorities originally said Khashoggi died during a fight with officials in the consulate, and that his body was removed by an unidentified person.

A string of gruesome details about the murder have continued to appear in the Turkish media.

Pro-government Turkish media said that intelligence officers showed Haspel video images and audio tapes of Khashoggi's killing gathered from the consulate. It was not clear what could be heard.

It was not until March 2018 that a government was finally formed, when the SPD agreed to enter a coalition. Merkel has led the CDU since 2000 and has been Germany's chancellor since 2005.

The killing of Jamal Khashoggi, a Saudi national and Washington Post columnist, has sparked outrage among Riyadh's Western allies and Turkey as well. "(Saudis said) 'Let's give a lesson to him'".

She recalled how Khashoggi handed her his two mobile phones before going inside to pick up papers needed for their upcoming marriage.

After weeks of denials, the Saudis have acknowledged that Khashoggi was killed in the consulate. I think people have assigned blame on Saudi Arabia with such certainty before the investigation is complete.

Germany and Saudi Arabia only returned their ambassadors in September after 10 months of frosty relations following criticism from Berlin of what it said was Saudi interference in Lebanese affairs.

The prince promised on Wednesday the killers would be brought to justice, his first public comments on the matter.

The US-based writer's eldest son arrived in the US from Saudi Arabia on Thursday, along with his family. During a meeting with Prince Mohammed on Tuesday, Salah was photographed with a pained and sullen look as he received the monarchy's condolences.

Dozens of people stood vigil outside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on Thursday to demand justice. One, his hands painted red, wore a mask depicting the face of Prince Mohammed.

In response to the killing, Pompeo this week announced moves against 21 Saudis to either revoke their visas or make them ineligible for U.S. visas after the Khashoggi killing.
