Facebook trims data breach to 29 million users as FBI probes

Facebook Inc (FB.O) on Friday said attackers in the mass security breach it announced late September accessed the accounts of about 30 million people in total and stole name and contact details for 29 million.

Hackers did not steal personal messages or financial data and did not use their access to accounts to access users' accounts on other websites, Facebook said.

For another 1 million people, the hackers got access, but weren't able to obtain any information.

Facebook has said 30 million accounts were compromised in a major hack. The social network has put out more details about the attack which exploited a vulnerability in Facebook's code between July 2017 and September 2018 impacting the view as feature that lets people preview how their profile appears for others.

The company had originally said up to 50 million accounts were affected in a cyberattack that exploited a trio of software flaws to steal "access tokens" that enable people to automatically log back onto the platform. As the bug that allowed the still-unidentified hackers to access profiles of millions of people provided them with the means to surreptitiously harvest some rather sensitive data, they were most likely compromised to the point that they could be targeted by fake-news campaigns or similar manipulation attempts by the attackers or anyone else who ends up buying or otherwise obtaining the data they've stolen. "Access tokens are the equivalent of digital keys that keep people logged in to Facebook so they don't need to re-enter their password every time they use the app", according to Facebook.

The social networking service Facebook plans to send messages to people whose accounts have been hacked.

Facebook users can check if their data was stolen by visiting the company's Help Center.

Florida, Alabama bracing for 'monstrous' Hurricane Michael
Hurricane-force winds extended outward up to 35 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds were outward up to 185 miles. The storm is expected to cause wide-spread power outages, high winds and heavy rain in Alabama.

The company said it would message affected users over the coming days to tell them what type of information had been accessed in the attack. All the company is saying is that they are taking it seriously and working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and other agencies to investigate. Facebook says that it isn't sure whether other, "smaller-scale attacks" are involved with this breach.

The hackers used an automated program to move from account to account and harvest the data quickly. Facebook then goes into some detail on how it all went down, which starts with the attackers already having access to some accounts. Facebook also provided a list of the kind of data that was stolen/used by hackers during the breach. Originally Facebook said 50 million accounts could have been affected, but Facebook didn't know if they had been misused.

Facebook has also established a Web page at facebook.com/help/securitynotice?ref=sec that will inform its 2 billion users who are logged in whether their accounts were affected.

Mr. Rosen explicitly stressed the attack did not affect any other Facebook products such as Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, Messenger Kids, Workplace, and Oculus.

The company had initially said 50m accounts were affected but now revised it "only" 30 million.

This was clearly an intentional, malicious theft of user data from Facebook, and some of that data is very granular.

At the time, CEO Mark Zuckerberg - whose own account was compromised - said attackers would have had the ability to view private messages or post on someone's account, but there's no sign that they did.
