Eagles rework Cox's deal to create cap space; not pursuing Bell trade

Jay Ajayi is out for the season with a torn ACL

The Philadelphia Eagles are in need of a running back after starter Jay Ajayi went down with a season-ending torn ACL.

It's a tough blow for an Eagles team that has been dealing with injuries to key players.

It's dot-connecting season in the NFL. The Eagles announced Monday that they placed him on injured reserve with a knee injury suffered in Sunday's loss to the Vikings, and multiple National Football League journalists reported that Ajayi had torn the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

The Eagles sure could use a dual-threat playmaker like McCoy, but there are other factors at work in a potential deal.

What next for Khabib Nurmagomedov & Conor McGregor after UFC 229 turmoil?
This sparked a brawl inside and outside the octagon, which involved members of Nurmagomedov's team. They were released when McGregor confirmed he didn't want to press charges.

Ajayi is now in his second year with the Eagles after spending three seasons with the Miami Dolphins. In reporting Cox' restructure, ESPN's Adam Schefter noted that the Eagles were not interested in Bell.

Meanwhile, the Steelers haven't ruled out trading Bell despite reports that he plans to end his holdout and rejoin the team during their bye in Week 7. Which would bring into play the eight figures in extra 2019 cap space that the Eagles created in the Cox restructuring, with the extra $6.5 million in extra 2018 cap space being used to cover Bell's base salary for the balance of the current season.

However, for a team off to a 2-3 start while attempting to defend its Super Bowl title, Bell could be seen as the kind of elite talent who could realistically put Philadelphia back over the top.

Ajayi won't be able to help balance the Eagles' offense after Sunday's injury, leaving the task to running backs Corey Clement and Wendell Smallwood. He also caught one pass for five yards.
