MI man's doorstop rock turns out to be a $100000 meteorite

Rock used as doorstop for decades identified as $100K meteorite

Central Michigan University geology professor Mona Sibescu said that of all her time at the university, this is the first "rock" she's tested that actually turned out to be a meteorite.

"It is heavy it is made of iron and nickel, it is 88.5 percent iron and 11.5 percent nickel", says Sirbescu.

The Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., corroborated Sirbescu's analysis that the 22-pound "rock" is, indeed, a meteorite, and is apparently the sixth-largest of its type to be discovered in MI.

After this the farmer took the stone to the University of MI, research staff after the study stated that the boulder is composed of Nickel and iron, and its estimated cost almost $ 100,000.

The owner of the meteorite said he inherited the rock when he bought a farm in 1988.

Watch Lindsey Graham Get Booed for Defending Brett Kavanaugh
Republicans and Democrats are fighting back and forth in the Senate over the Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation. Christine Blasey Ford- nor the witnesses who corroborate her testimony- can not be called an investigation", the statement read .

This January, southern MI experienced a meteor flash that showered fragments of space rock all over Livingston County. The farmer claimed the rock had fallen in the 1930s and that the new owner could have it since it was "part of the property".

"It's the most valuable specimen I have ever held in my life, monetarily and scientifically", she said. He said the farmer who sold him the property told him it landed in his backyard in the 1930s. In the morning, the farmer and his father found the crater and dug out the still-warm meteorite. And now a man in Grand Rapids just found out the meteorite he has from that impact is worth at least $100,000.

This year, the man was inspired by stories of MI residents finding and selling pieces of meteorites.

While a space rock's size and what elements it's made from determine its value, all meteorites are worth something, and there's a large market for collectors. A slice of the meteor was sent to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC for double verification, which verified it was in fact a meteorite, accordant to a press release.

He also told the station that he plans to donate 10 percent of the sale price to Central Michigan University.
