Among the games will be Final Fantasy VII, Tekken 3, Jumping Flash, Ridge Racer Type 4, Wild Arms and 15 other classic titles.

The release date is now set for December 3, with pre-orders available in the U.S. and Canada at US$99.99, but regional availability will be announced soon.

"This PlayStation Classic announcement is super out of left field". Players will also have to make do with wired controllers, but at least the package will come with two so you can jump on local multiplayer with a friend.

Following in the footsteps of Nintendo, Sony is allowing gamers to relive their nostalgia in ways even more concrete than playing the latest in a video game franchise. The bundle won't include an AC adapter and supports any that supports 5V, 1.0 A USB output.

The nostalgic re-issues of the classic consoles have been hugely popular amongst Nintendo fans, with the most recent SNES Classic Mini has sold 5.28 million units worldwide since its launch in September 2017. Every platform holder has been peddling their retro wares for years in new and "exciting" formats, usually in non-backward compatible form, ensuring that you need to buy five versions of the same game to play it everywhere. Anyone who wants to pre-order the PlayStation Classic online will want to check the following websites, though other retailers will likely throw their hats in the ring soon as well. Missing, so far, are Gran Turismo, the system's best selling game during its lifespan; Tomb Raider, which became a national phenomenon with the PlayStation; and fan favorite Metal Gear Solid.
