What does Paul Manafort's plea deal mean for Trump?

Former Donald Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort

Prosecutors have filed new charging documents against former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, signaling he may plead guilty ahead of a second trial next week. "This had absolutely nothing to do with the president or his victorious 2016 presidential campaign", the press secretary, Sarah Sanders, said in a statement. "It is totally unrelated".

Manafort is expected to appear in court later Friday morning. But the plea nonetheless makes Manafort the latest associate of Trump, a president known to place a premium on loyalty among subordinates, to admit guilt and cooperate with investigators in hopes of leniency. Depending on the sentencing decisions of the judges in the two cases, Manafort, 69, could spend up to 31 years in prison. In summary, he said later, this is a big victory for Mueller.

Manafort had faced seven charges in Washington and faces another 10 possible charges in Virginia which had been declared in mistrial.

With legions of Ivy League-educated prosecutors, the investigative resources of the FBI, the Treasury Department and virtually the entire federal bureaucracy at the disposal of prosecutors, an ordinary citizen has little chance of winning a court victory.

In his Virginia trial last month, Manafort was found guilty on 8 counts (5 tax fraud, 2 bank fraud, and 1 of hiding foreign accounts), with verdicts unable to be reached for the remaining 10 counts.

In a statement Friday, the President's attorney Rudy Giuliani reiterated that confidence. "The reason: the President did nothing wrong". The initial version, which was quickly revised, included "Paul Manafort will tell the truth" as part of the quote.

It's been reported that two weeks before Trump accepted the GOP nomination, Paul Manafort offered "private briefings" on the state of the 2016 election to Russian Oligarch, and close Putin ally, Oleg Deripaska (who also has ties to Kilimnik).

It is unclear what information Manafort is prepared to provide to investigators about President Donald Trump or that could aid Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. He was engaged in money laundering even as he was campaign chairman for Trump and for many years he was clearly involved in numerous activities in Ukraine, including the audacious gambit of trying to " put pressure " on what he apparently called "Obama jews"-Obama administration officials.

"I feel very badly for Paul Manafort and his wonderful family", the President tweeted the week of Manafort's conviction in his Virginia trial.

Tesla Cuts Number of Car Paint Options Available to Boost Productivity
Tesla stock closed on Monday almost 8.5% higher at US$285.50, just off the session peak at US$286.03. Tesla shares fell Friday, amid news the company had lost two members of its senior leadership team.

In addition to the criminal charges, prosecutors said in a court filing that Manafort could be forced to forfeit assets that would deal him a significant financial blow: four houses he owns, including an expansive retreat in the Hamptons, plus four bank accounts and the proceeds of a life insurance policy. He is now accused of conspiracy against the United States and conspiracy to obstruct justice.

As Manafort's trial begins, one of the key witnesses against him will be Rick Gates, who has cut a deal with Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

Even Harvard University law professor Alan Dershowitz, who has been one of Trump's most staunch defenders in the Russian Federation probe in numerous media appearances, conceded on Friday that Mueller's deal securing Manafort's cooperation was "a big win" and "big get" for the investigation into Trump's ties to Russian Federation, adding, "Potentially it opens up lots of doors that probably haven't been open before", according to an NBC News report.

Manafort, Trump's top political operative from May to August 2016, has always been considered one of the bigger fish for Muller's office.

Here are three takeaways from the deal and what Manafort's cooperation with the special counsel means for his sentencing, the Mueller investigation, and a potential pardon from the president.

Manafort's deal could also prompt other subjects of Mueller's investigation to cooperate, causing "the proverbial snowball to roll down the hill", Waxman said. Mueller was authorized to look into matters that arose from the Russian Federation investigation, leading to the charges against Manafort, which are not related to the Trump campaign or to Russian Federation. The allegations revealed last October reiterated a year of news reports that Manafort had secretly funneled income from Ukrainian lobbying contacts for years.

Manafort told the judge he wants to plead guilty.

He had steadfastly refused to cooperate with Mueller even as the Virginia jury convicted him for hiding from USA tax authorities $16 million he earned as a political consultant in Ukraine to fund an opulent lifestyle and then lying to banks to secure $20 million in loans.
