SpaceX Signs its First Private Passenger to Fly 'Round the Moon

SpaceX books private passenger flight around the Moon

SpaceX said it has signed the first private moon traveler, with some changes to its original game plan.

"SpaceX has signed the world's first private passenger to fly around the Moon aboard out BFR launch vehicle - an important step towards enabling access for everyday people who dream of traveling to space".

SpaceX has a passenger for the first private trip around the moon on its Big Falcon Rocket.

On Twitter, Elon Musk was asked who the passenger is and simply responded with an emoji of the Japanese flag.

The identity of the passenger is set to be announced on a webcast on the company's website Monday, September 17 at 6pm PT. "No one has visited since the last Apollo mission in 1972". SpaceX spokespeople told the Wall Street Journal that the mission as still going to happen but remained tight-lipped about more details.

Musk responded to questions from Twitter users following the announcement, saying that the rocket is still in development and has been "intentionally" created to resemble one seen in a classic comic book series, "The Adventures of Tintin". Plans for that flight were eventually delayed; it's unclear if one of the two passengers from that flight will be taking the trip on the BFR.

"SpaceX will probably build 30 to 40 rocket cores for 300 missions over five years".

In April, Musk posted a picture to Instagram (since removed) of what he described as the "main body tool" for his company's BFR interplanetary spaceship.

At the time, Musk said the pair approached SpaceX about sending them on a weeklong flight and paid a "significant" deposit for the trip.

Musk announced the BFR in 2017 and has since gone on to state that it could be used for a wide array of purposes.
