Hurricane Florence's path: What to expect and when

Airmen from the South Carolina Air National Guard and 169th Fighter Wing prepare to deploy from Mc Entire Joint National Guard Base to Bluffton South Carolina in advance of Hurricane Florence

At 2:00 pm (1800 GMT), Florence was a Category 4 hurricane packing winds of 130 miles per hour (215 kilometers per hour), the Miami-based National Hurricane Center (NHC) said.

Mandatory evacuation orders have been issued for the coasts of South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia, and states of emergency have been declared there as well as Maryland and the District of Columbia.

Jeff Byard, associate administrator for response and recovery at the Federal Emergency Management Agency, said: "This storm is going to be a direct hit on our coast". You are going to be displaced from your home in the coastal areas, and there will be flooding in the inland areas as well.

And the storm surge, which could be as much as 12 feet in some areas, will be on top of sea level rise from climate change. Cape Lookout to Ocracoke Island could see 5 to 8 feet of water, experts say.

The storm itself, however, is not expected to make landfall until Thursday evening at the earliest, according to the latest forecast path from the NHC.

Hurricane Florence, a powerful Category 4 storm, is closing in on the Southeast, bringing threatening winds, a high storm surge and tons of rain.

Many areas, particularly focused along the North Carolina coastline, could see frequent gusts well over 100 miles per hour with sustained winds near 100 miles per hour as Florence slowly moves ashore.

The eye of the storm is forecast to make landfall late on Thursday or early Friday along a stretch of coastline already saturated by rising seas, and then the system could meander over the land for days. Other counties are evacuating low lying and flood prone areas.

Contacted by Gizmodo , the couple's lawyer, Earnest Badway, declined the opportunity to comment on the latest developments. He sued them to try to recover the donated funds, but earlier this week, a lawyer for the couple said the money was gone .

North Carolina governor Roy Cooper said his state was "in the bullseye" of the storm.

Florence's centre was expected to move over the Atlantic Ocean between the Bahamas and Bermuda on Tuesday and Wednesday before approaching North and SC on Thursday. Flash flooding and river flooding is also expected in these regions.

Regarding the Bahamas, the American meteorologist said Hurricane Florence is going to take a track that will keep it east and northeast of the country.

Hurricane Florence's size is "staggering", National Hurricane Center Director Ken Graham warned.

Customers line up to buy propane at Socastee Hardware store, ahead of the arrival of Hurricane Florence in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Sept. 10, 2018.

Trump has approved emergency declarations for both coastal states, a standard move allowing the release of federal funds and equipment to aid in protection and recovery efforts. Even if you've ridden out storms before, this one is different.

"We can not emphasize the importance to take action now", he said.
