Apple says United States tariffs on China would hit 'wide range' of products

The Trump administration is poised to impose 25 percent penalties this week on $200bn worth of Chinese goods

President Donald Trump suggested this morning that Apple should move its manufacturing plants to America as a way to avoid tariffs in the ongoing trade dispute between the U.S. and China, following reports that the company's products could become more expensive.

US President Donald Trump's administration has threatened 25 percent tariffs on the Chinese imports, including seafood, furniture, lighting products, tires, chemicals and plastics.

The proposed tariffs follow 25% duties the Trump administration already has placed on $50 billion in goods from China, aimed at putting a stop to what the White House has said is China's theft of US intellectual property, the forced transfer of American technology and cyberattacks on USA computer networks.

"Because all tariffs ultimately show up as a tax on United States consumers, they will increase the cost of Apple products that our customers have come to rely on in their daily lives", Apple wrote in the letter to Trump administration.

Those potential tariffs would come on top of tariffs Trump has said he's poised to slap on $200 billion worth of goods from China - everything from handbags to bicycle tires. And on September 7, he said he's ready to hit another $267 billion worth of Chinese imports with tariffs, with his underlings preparing the necessary paperwork. "That totally changes the equation".

Trump's threat to escalate US tariffs on Chinese imports contributed to a decline on Wall Street, with stock index futures dropping on concern that companies and workers would likely endure some financial pain.

That could help reignite USA demands that Beijing narrow its trade gap, which has temporarily been overshadowed by their clash over complaints China steals or pressures foreign companies to hand over technology.

North Korea holds celebratory military parade - minus the missiles
President Trump also praised his own leadership by saying communication with Kim is "much better than before" he took office. The parade also provided Kim an opportunity to show off restored ties with his most important ally, China.

"The public comment period, which is closed as of today, will force a delay before the final tariff list is published as the USA trade representative works to address the multitude of comments received and potentially makes slight alterations to the initial proposal", Height said in a Thursday note.

"Even though footwear is not on the third list proposed by the Trump administration, many other consumer goods and production machinery is at risk, driving up prices for all American consumers", said Matt Priest, president and CEO of the Footwear Distributors and Retailers of America. "It would cause broad, disproportionate economic harm to U.S. interests", the letter said. "If the US$200 billion tariffs are imposed, American consumers will see that prices of consumer goods increase significantly", he said.

"If the U.S. dogmatically implements any new tariff measures against China, China will have to take the necessary countermeasures", commerce spokesman Gao Feng told reporters. According to CNBC, the company said that the President's proposed tariffs would impact various Apple products, such as the Apple Watch, AirPods, HomePod, Mac, Mini, Apple Pencil, and chargers and adapters for a number of gadgets.

"Make your products in the United States instead of China".

Intel Corp., the world's second-largest chip maker, weighed in supporting Apple's opposition to the tariffs and broadening the argument.

U.S. Census Bureau. Trade in Goods with China. Last Friday, over 150 industry associations and four major tech companies wrote to the US Trade Representative urging moderation or requesting exemptions from tariffs. The administration should cease further tariffs actions and give another shot at talks for a trade deal with with China, it said.

US companies are joining forces to oppose a common threat-tariffs.
