Tropical Storm Gordon lashes south FL, warnings for central Gulf updated

Monitoring Tropical Wave Moving Toward Gulf

Gordon struck the coast at 70 miles per hour, just shy of hurricane strength, near Pascagoula, Mississippi late Tuesday.

Gordon is expected to produce total rain accumulations of four to eight inches over the western Florida Panhandle, southwest Alabama, southern and central MS, southeastern and northeastern Louisiana, and southeast Arkansas, the NHC said.

While south Florida and the Florida Keys are experiencing the effects from Gordon, the National Hurricane Center has issued watches and warnings for the central Gulf Coast.

A Tropical Storm Warning includes the coast from the Western Florida Panhandle through Alabama and MS to Louisiana, including New Orleans, Pensacola, Mobile, Fort Walton Beach, Biloxi, and Gulfport.

Tropical Storm Gordon never became a hurricane but it was deadly all the same, killing a child by blowing a tree onto a mobile home as it made landfall.

Many areas in Houston saw upwards of 30 inches of rain.

Tropical-force winds from fast-moving Gordon smashed into the coastline of Alabama and the western Florida Panhandle on Tuesday evening, the frontal edge of a system just offshore that forecasters warned could become a hurricane by the time it makes landfall.

Raging fire tears through historic Brazil museum
The museum is housed in the Paço de São Cristóvão, which was home to the Brazilian imperial family for much of the 19th century. The funding cuts were particularly acute this year, with the museum receiving just 98,115 reals between January and August.

Authorities across the Gulf Coast urged people to stay out of the water - warnings that beach lovers like Cameron Armstrong and Matthew Ewbanks ignored on their visit to Gulf Shores on the Alabama Gulf Coast.

The National Hurricane Centre in Miami said the storm was west-south-west of Marco Island, and maximum sustained winds were clocked at 50mph.

The storm is forecast to unleash multiple hazards along the coast, including torrential rain, strong winds, and a storm surge of up to several feet, which is a rise in ocean water above normally dry coastal land. The region could see rising waters of 3 to 5 feet.

It promised more of the same on a forecast track expected to take it northeast into Arkansas, which was forecast to get heavy rain from the system by Wednesday night. Still, the southeastern part of the state remains under a tropical storm warning and residents need to be prepared for the storm to shift west, Edwards said. Highest winds had increased to 50 miles per hour, and the National Hurricane Center said Gordon could be near hurricane strength at landfall Tuesday night.

A storm surge covered barrier islands as the storm blew through, and some inland roadways were flooded by the rain.

A hurricane watch is in effect from the Alabama-Florida Border to the mouth of the Pearl River in Louisiana.
