Burt Reynolds, the mustachioed megastar who first strutted on screen more than half a century ago, died Thursday, according to his agent Todd Eisner.

The entertainment website says he went into cardiac arrest and was rushed to a hospital in Florida. The film is expected to hit theatres in 2019.

Afterwards, Reynolds had a brief stopover in NY where he appeared in several theatrical productions before moving out west to Hollywood. He reportedly died of a heart attack in Florida.

Actors Ralph Macchio and Kevin Smith also paid tribute to the star, remembering their childhoods watching him in "Smokey the Bandit".

The actor soon started to rebuild his fortune, appearing in classics such as Boogie Nights, Without a Paddle, The Dukes of Hazzard.

It was in his Hollywood heyday that Burt boasted an impressive property portfolio, including his famous "Burt Reynolds Ranch", a private jet and a helicopter. Reynolds was an award-winning actor with numerous nominations under his belt, including his Oscar-nominated best-supporting actor role in Boogie Nights.

Reynolds is survived by his son.

Of Field, whom he was in a relationship with for five years, Reynolds later described her as "the one that got away", calling her the "love of his life". He returned to television, where he'd gotten his start, mostly in Westerns, and produced his own sitcom, Evening Shade, which brought him an Emmy.

At the peak of his career, Reynolds was one of the most bankable actors in the film industry, reeling off a series of box office smashes until a career downturn in the mid-1980s.

Reynolds also played a starring role in the 1977 football movie "Semi-Tough", which co-starred Kris Kristofferson.

"If I had to put only one of my movies in a time capsule, it would be 'Deliverance, '" Reynolds also wrote about the 1972 hillbilly thriller.

But Burt didn't let his financial issues hold back his career, going on to star in 47 films after declaring bankruptcy. In 1988, he married actress Loni Anderson, but that also ended bitterly in 1993.
