Twitter CEO Involved in Alex Jones, Richard Spencer Decisions

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey reportedly stepped in to save Alex Jones Richard Spencer from bans

Senate leaders rejected Google's offer to make Kent Walker, its senior vice president and chief legal officer, available for the hearings.

Twitter has denied Dorsey was involved in any of the decisions.

This morning, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey and Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg appeared before the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee to discuss foreign interference, specifically from Russian Federation, in U.S. elections via social media.

While the committee invited either Google CEO Sundar Pichai or Alphabet's Larry Page to testify, the company declined to send either of its top executives. That scrutiny has led to additional criticism over the companies' respect for user privacy and whether conservatives are being censored.

Dorsey and Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg will testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee regarding efforts to identify and prevent efforts by foreign governments to spread false information on the platforms. Warner has proposed ways that the companies could be regulated for the first time.

"Twitter does not use political ideology to make any decisions, whether related to ranking content on our service or how we enforce our rules", Dorsey said in prepared remarks to a congressional hearing with U.S. technology giants. Twitter has been accused by some of suppressing conservative voices on the platform - which the company denied in July.

In prepared testimony released by Facebook Tuesday, Sandberg said that Facebook was "too slow to spot" Russia's purported influence operation and "too slow to act".

A year ago, big technology companies disclosed that Russian-backed actors had manipulated their platforms in hopes of swaying the election.

Earlier this year the company said it was taking aggressive measures to combat inauthentic accounts. Thirteen Russians were indicted by special counsel Robert Mueller earlier this year on charges of an elaborate plot to disrupt the 2016 US presidential election by creating fake accounts that pushed divisive issues on social media.

Only Dorsey was invited to the House hearing after specific Republican concerns about bias on Twitter.

On bias, the Twitter CEO is aggressive in defending his company, saying in the prepared House testimony that he wants to be clear about one thing: "Twitter does not use political ideology to make any decisions, whether related to ranking content on our service or how we enforce our rules".
