Trump delivers on coal promise

President Donald Trump's administration announced a plan on Tuesday, August 21, to weaken regulations on USA coal plants, giving a boost to an industry that former leader Barack Obama had hoped to phase out to cut harmful emissions that drive global warming.

In 2017, President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing EPA to review the Clean Power Plan to repeal, replace or revise it.

Finalized in 2015, the plan would by 2030 reduce emissions from coal-fired power plants from about a third lower than 2005 levels.

The Clean Power Plan prompted dozens of states to sue for federal overreach and the U.S. Supreme Court put the regulations on hold.

Power plants and regulators have endured a kind of whiplash for years, as federal rules to clean up emissions have been on - and then off - repeatedly for more than a decade.

He said he believes the new rules by the Trump administration is a win for states because they will have the opportunity to regulate the industry within their own state.

"I commend President Trump and Acting EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler for working to reestablish cooperation between states and the federal government to attain American energy security and to meet our environmental goals", said Hyde-Smith, who serves on the Senate Appropriations Committee and its subcommittee that has jurisdiction over the EPA.

The new plan is projected to release at least 12 times the mount of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere compared to the Obama plan over the next 10 years, according to estimates.

The changes, which would be allowed just for power plants, would also enable the kind of efficiency upgrades envisioned under the Trump administration's proposed carbon dioxide requirements, Mr Wehrum said.

Lira rallies after Turkey raises tariffs on U.S. imports
The two North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies have traded tit-for-tat sanctions over the pastor's house arrest. Meanwhile, Turkish courts have moved to defuse other legal cases that have irritated relations with the EU.

"States will have a lot more time to submit their plans".

Bill Wehrum, administrator for EPA's Office of Air and Radiation, acknowledged that the industry "continues to transform in front of our eyes".

It is in the situation the agency considers most likely to occur where the premature death toll would increase, as would heart and lung disease and chronic problems like asthma and bronchitis.

The plan was the centrepiece in an effort to lower emissions and help meet global climate change goals set out in the Paris agreement, which Trump has pledged to leave.

In a press conference, Inslee said President Trump's proposal is a deadly coal plan that will expose Washingtonians to deadly air, and that the president has sold out children's health to the coal industry. "We have abundant legal authority to deal with those pollutants directly", he told reporters.

There are no coal-fired power plants now operating in Rhode Island or MA.

A coalition of 19 states and cities, including New York, California, and MA, has formed to defend the Clean Power Plan in court. Cheap natural gas has been largely responsible for shuttering hundreds of coal plants in the U.S. The falling price of renewables has only further loosened coal's grip on the power sector.

"If it's a step anywhere, it's a step backwards", Thornton said, adding that reducing carbon emissions also reduces other air pollutants that are harmful to people's health.
