Trump team unites in bid to topple Iran regime

President Rouhani is facing renewed discontent over living standards which are being squeezed under the threat of US sanctions

The United States also plans to re-introduce potentially more damaging sanctions on Iranian oil in November.

In an early-morning tweet, Trump said the reimposition of sanctions means, "Anyone doing business with Iran will NOT be doing business with the United States". "I am asking for WORLD PEACE, nothing less", he added.

"We are determined to protect European economic operators engaged in legitimate business with Iran", European officials said in a statement on Monday.

At the same time, Mr Trump is willing to meet Iranian leaders "at any time" to discuss "a real comprehensive deal that will contain their regional ambitions, will end their malign behaviour, and deny them any path to a nuclear weapon", the officials said.

The European Union's diplomatic chief Federica Mogherini said the bloc deeply regrets the USA move. "Individuals or entities that fail to wind down activities with Iran risk severe consequences".

The Europeans didn't like any of it.

Trump's contempt for the nuclear deal dates back to his time as presidential candidate and on May 8, he made good on a pledge to pull America out of the global agreement.

One of the officials said that almost 100 worldwide firms have announced their intention to leave the Iranian market, particularly in the energy and finance sectors.

He said that the sanctions will be "fully enforced" in an "aggressive manner", including countries and companies dealing with Iran.

The Islamic Republic's economy, hobbled by years of sanctions, has suffered in recent months with the uncertainty over the atomic accord. The country's rial currency has tanked, and the downturn has sparked protests across the nation. Renault, Total, Peugeot, General Electric, Boeing, Hyundai, Mazda, IndusInd Bank and other major companies have either left Iran or asked their investors to do so before the return of United States sanctions.

Iranian authorities recently also arrested 45 people, including the Central Bank's deputy chief, as part of a crackdown on financial fraud, according to judiciary spokesman Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejehi.

National security adviser John Bolton said Iran's leadership is on "very shaky ground", but he insisted economic pressure from the Trump administration is not an attempt at "regime change".

"The remaining parties to the JCPOA have committed to work on, inter alia, the preservation and maintenance of effective financial channels with Iran, and the continuation of Iran's export of oil and gas", the joint statement between the European Union and the E3 highlighted.

The European Commission said it will grant exceptions if the company can prove that it is leaving Iran for reasons not linked to the USA threat.

"If you're an enemy and you stab the other person with a knife, and then you say you want negotiations, then the first thing you have to do is remove the knife", the Iranian leader said in an interview on state television.
