Melania wades into Lebron James, Donald Trump feud

USA Today Sports Reuters

"He's doing an fantastic job for his community", Jordan, now owner of the National Basketball Association's Charlotte Hornets, told NBC News through a spokesperson.

First lady Melania Trump stepped away from her husband's criticism of National Basketball Association star LeBron James to compliment his work on behalf of children and even offer to visit his school for at-risk children.

During an interview with Don Lemon of CNN, James expressed his belief that United States President Donald Trump was attempting to use sports to divide citizens.

After sending out - "Lebron James was just interviewed by the dumbest man on television, Don Lemon". Trump called Don Lemon the "dumbest man on television", before saying he made LeBron look smart, insulting his intelligence in the process.

James - who once said that Mr Trump doesn't "give a f**k about people" - is considered by many the greatest player in the sport's history.

Trump's tweet on Friday night drew accusations of racism because Lemon and James are black men and had been discussing Trump's previous attacks on black athletes in the interview.

Billie Jean King tweeted praise for LeBron James Sunday morning.

James has said that Trump "doesn't understand the power that he has for being the leader of this attractive country".

During the interview, James also discussed a new school he has opened for underprivileged children in his home town in OH, which offers free meals and bikes to students, as well as job placement assistance for parents and an on-site food bank. "A man who puts kids in classrooms or one who puts kids in cages?" he posted, referring to a school that James has started for at-risk children in his hometown and the Trump administration policy of separating children from families crossing into the U.S. illegally. "I would never sit across from him", James quickly replied. Shortly before midnight, he made his thoughts known on what he thought of the LeBron-Lemon conversation.

Her spokeswoman, Stephanie Grisham, released a statement Saturday saying Melania Trump would consider visiting the facility as part of her "Be Best" initiative aimed at improving the lives of children.

"Going to White House was a great honour until you showed up!"

Trump's comment sparked huge reaction on Twitter from James' backers. James said on Twitter. It's clear people have LeBron James' back - even Melania Trump defied her husband to express her support for the would-be subject of his bully tweets.
