‘Facts of Life’ star Charlotte Rae dies at 92

Charlotte Rae cause of death

She is best known for her role as housekeeper Edna Garrett, first on the sitcom "Diff'rent Strokes" and then the spinoff "The Facts of Life", with both shows launching in the 1970s and running several years into the '80s. She disclosed a year ago that she was battling bone cancer. The actress had previously been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

Friends and fans have already taken to social media to pay their respects to the fallen star, including Mindy Cohn, who played one of Rae's students on The Facts of Life.

A rep told ET Canada that the Tony and Emmy nominated passed away surrounded by family at her Los Angeles home on Sunday.

In 1954, Charlotte made her TV debut on an episode of Look Up and Live, which lead to roles in The United States Steel Hour, Car 54 and The Phil Silvers Show.

"I'm feeling so terrific and so glad to be above ground", she explained. She revealed her mother, sister and uncle died of pancreatic cancer and that she was cancer-free after six months of chemotherapy. Now I have to figure out if I want to go have treatment again or opt for life.

Viewers quickly fell in love with Mrs. Garrett, who also served as a wise yet sharp-tongued mentor to the young women on "The Facts of Life". Her death was confirmed by Fox News.

Kohli keeps alive Indian hopes of gatecrashing England´s 1000th test

"I had handsome wigs", Rae said.

Rae played the beloved TV character until 1986, when health reasons forced her to step down. Mrs. Garrett was the house mother at an all-girls' boarding school, and helped the students through some of the toughest moments of their lives.

Upon hearing the news, stars including Kathy Griffin, Audra McDonald, Eric West and co-star Todd Bridges have been quick to send their love.

The actress also appeared in 101 Dalmatians: The Series and starred alongside Hollywood actress Meryl Streep in the movie Ricki and the Flash.

A reboot of The Facts of Life is in the early stages at Sony Pictures TV with production companies run by Leonardo DiCaprio and Jessica Biel circling the project.

She is survived by a sister, her son Larry, three grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
