Trump's new Iran policy calls for an economic crackdown following the withdrawal from the Iran deal, a buildup of anti-Iran military alliances with the US's regional partners, and a media campaign to heat up already simmering civil unrest in the country.
President Trump earlier this year pulled the US out of the highly-flawed global deal meant to prevent Tehran from developing a nuclear weapon and ordered increased sanctions, as well as threatening penalties for companies from other countries that continue to do business with the terror-sponsoring Islamic regime.
Pompeo said the United States wants "the Iranian people to have a strong voice of who their leadership will be", although he stopped short of calling for regime change in Tehran.
European countries, along with Russian Federation and China, remain committed to the nuclear deal, but European companies are unlikely to risk USA sanctions to do business with Iran. "They have got to behave like a normal country", he said, describing Iranian leaders as "bad actors".
On Monday, Iran's currency hit an all-time low against the United States dollar as a fresh round of sanctions looms - the rial fell to 112,000 against the 1 USD, down from 98,000.
But Iran did not appear interested in drawing attention to them.
The plunge in the currency and soaring inflation have sparked sporadic demonstrations against profiteering and corruption, with many protesters chanting anti-government slogans.

Facebook has recorded the biggest fall in corporate history as its value plunged by $120bn, when markets opened in NY . Amazon has been in a race with Apple to see which company would be the first to reach a $1 trillion market cap.
Trump administration officials say the sanctions are being restored starting Monday in an effort to change the Iranian regime's behavior.
Trump and other officials have expressed hopes that the sanctions and demonstrations will help put pressure on the government to come back to the negotiating table. In August and November Iran faces two new waves of sanctions that will shut off their access to U.S. banking and oil exports.
ATR, jointly owned by European consortium Airbus and Italy's Leonardo, has been pushing US officials to allow it to finish its delivery of aircraft to Iran.
USA sanctions targeting Iranian trade in automobiles, gold and other key metals will be re-imposed on Monday, while sanctions targeting the country's energy and banking sector will resume November 4. "If anybody's inciting anything, look no further than to Iran", press secretary Sarah Sanders said and added that President Trump has been "very clear about what he's not going to allow to take place".
He was responding to a July 22 warning from Rouhani that the USA should not "play with the lion's tail" and warned that any conflict with Iran would be the "mother of all wars".
On Saturday, a man taking part in a protest in Karaj in the northern province of Alborz was fatally shot, according to the semi-official Fars news agency.
