Evacuations ordered near Lynchburg, Va., after warnings of possible dam collapse

Lynchburg floods: Flooding dam sparks evacuations in US city

The nearest downstream town is Lynchburg, located about 1 mile from the dam.

In a dire warning Thursday night, the National Weather Service reported the College Lake Dam could fail, and if it does, "the water depth at Lynchburg could exceed 17 feet in 7 minutes".

Members of the Campbell County Fire Department wade through water at an apartment complex in Lynchburg, Va., Aug. 2, 2018.

"The good news is that the rain has stopped and began to recede yesterday, relieving some of the pressure on the dam", Major Tommy Carter of the Lynchburg Sheriff's office told Fox News on Friday, "but the bad news is that there's more rain in the forecast today and the dam has been weakened".

A truck passes a partially submerged abandoned vehicle in Lynchburg, Va. during a thunderstorm, August 2, 2018. Engineers determined that the dam's spillway was not large enough to handle water flow in the event of extreme weather conditions.

The west-central Virginia city near the Blue Ridge Mountains has received plenty of runoff from recent rains, with 4 to 6 inches falling in the area Thursday evening and filling College Lake beyond its capacity.

Putin Ready To Invite Trump To Russia, Visit DC 'If Appropriate'
On Friday afternoon, Trump will convene a National Security Council meeting devoted to the issue of election security. Aide Yuri Ushakov said that while a meeting should take place, " it would be wise to let the dust settle " first.

Recommendations from the investigation called for either rehabilitating the dam or having it completely decommissioned. The city owns the dam, but the university owns the lake.

Downtown Lynchburg would not be affected, Gearing says. If you are in low lying areas below the College Lake Dam, you should move to higher ground immediately.

And every proposed fix would cost millions of dollars.

The Virginia Department of Highways transferred ownership of the dam and roadway to the City of Lynchburg; however, the lake continues to be under the ownership of the University of Lynchburg.

Four to six inches of rain were said to have fallen overnight.

A press conference is scheduled to be held at 3 p.m. for an update. "We are developing a plan to stabilize the dam which may include opening the sluice gate at the dam to reduce the water levels".
