England did not have to wait long for their first breakthrough as Broad (2/29) trapped Murali Vijay and then removed Shikhar Dhawan (13) caught behind.

With 35 wickets having tumbled inside three days, England will be hoping they can grab the five remaining Indian wickets quickly on day four so that they can mark their 1000th test with a victory.

Sharma then had Bairstow taken by at first slip and two balls later he dismissed Ben Stokes (six) via a fine low catch by Kohli at third slip off what became the last ball before lunch.

Virat Kohli single-handedly kept India in the first Test with his maiden hundred in England but the captain would still rate the memorable knock second to his 141 in a lost run-chase against Australia in Adelaide nearly four years ago.

This is England's 1,000th Test and the first of a five-match series.

Malan and Root added 31 runs for the fourth wicket, and pushed England past 50 in the 17th over.

His innings followed the 20-year-old Surrey left-arm swing bowler's Test-best return of four for 74 on Thursday. "If we can bowl well and take a couple up top, we will hopefully win".

England pace battery, led by Stuart Broad, gobbled up half the Indian batting line up under favourable overcast conditions as the visiting batsmen were either reckless with their shot selection or got too good deliveries to counter.

Ashwin, who also took the wicket of Alastair Cook with the final ball of the second day, had figures of 3-34.

Ashwin struck again when England captain Joe Root was well caught low down at leg-slip by Rahul off a genuine glance. Sensing closure of the innings, Curran attacked the bowling, hitting sixes off both Sharma and Ashwin, as he reached his maiden Test half-century at a run-a-ball gallop.

Middlesex left-hander Dawid Malan arguably "owed" England a big score after dropping Kohli in the slips on 21 and 51.

Curran, who bats left-handed as well as bowls, brought up his maiden Test fifty off a mere 54 balls in supreme style by lofting Sharma over extra-cover for six.
