Carr Fire: Residents describe blaze roaring through Northern California; homes evacuated

A charred neighborhood destroyed by the Carr Fire is seen west of Redding California

A day earlier, the flames turned the sky orange while sweeping through the historic Gold Rush town of Shasta and nearby Keswick, then jumping the Sacramento River into Redding, a city of about 92,000 people and the largest in the region.

"This fire is extremely risky and moving with no regard for what's in its path", he said.

CAL FIRE reported Thursday night that the fire has burned about 28,000 acres.

Conditions are ripe for the continued spread of the blaze, as the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CalFire) noted that "continued hot, dry weather is forecasted for the remainder of the week with triple digit temperatures".

Late today, crews found the body of a bulldozer operator who was hired privately to clear vegetation in the blaze's path, McLean said.

Two weeks ago, a firefighter died fighting the Ferguson Fire east of San Francisco when a bulldozer overturned.

"There have been some injuries to civilians and firefighters", California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection spokesman Scott McLean told the newspaper.

The flames moved so fast that firefighters working in oven-like temperatures and bone-dry conditions had to drop efforts to battle the blaze at one point to help people escape.

More than 1,700 firefighters are battling the blaze, Cal Fire said in an evening advisory.

"The fire is creating a huge wind vacuum and moving very rapidly toward west Redding".

"They say it was like a 'fire tornado, '" said Chris Corona, one man who lives in the area.

Allison Woods and Tamara Damante were providing live coverage of the fire for KRCR-TV in Redding when they announced the blaze was approaching their studio and they needed to leave.

"I don't think we can predict which way this fire's going to go, and that's why I didn't take any chances", Ing said.

The Medical Center has not received evacuation orders but has chosen to evacuate the babies due to the time and resources required to evacuate them.

Medics and hospital staff have been directly impacted by the fire. Vibra Hospital, which provides long-term care, said patients were evacuated. "Several members have lost their homes".

A Cal Fire spokesman could only confirm portions of west Redding were under evacuation.

Governor Jerry Brown declares a State of Emergency in response to the Carr Fire.

The Western U.S., and California specifically, have been besieged by powerful fires this summer, which recently forced the closure of a smoke-filled Yosemite National Park.

A firefighter from the city of Redding was killed as a result of the Carr Fire, California officials said in a statement Friday.

The fire exploded overnight, destroying dozens of homes.
