British Open: Nike Athlete Francesco Molinari Wins Italy’s First Major Golf Title

Francesco Molinari of Italy poses with his trophy after winning the British Open at Carnoustie Championship Course in Scotland on Sunday

On a dramatic final day on which the lead changed hands many times, a birdie at the final hole gave Molinari an 8-under-par total of 276, making him the first Italian ever to win a major.

He shot a 5-under 66 and is tied for sixth place, four strokes off the lead. "It's been a few years since I've felt like this", an ebullient Woods said after his best score in a Major since another 66 in the second round of the 2011 Masters.

Typical of his first full season since 2015 because of back surgeries, the challenge is more the number of players in front of him than the deficit he faces. But 69 was the low score among the first 22 players out in Sunday's final round as the breeze was blowing 15-20 miles per hour.

He rolled in a birdie on the par-five 14th to move into the lead on seven-under.

McIlroy nailed an outstanding eagle putt from 40 feet at the 14th to create a six-way tie for the lead.

Spieth failed to make a birdie in the final round, adding instead three bogeys and a double-bogey, the latter courtesy of that visit to the bush on the par-5 sixth.

"All the guys I've talked to said, "Live it up while you can", Schauffele told reporters on Saturday after his third-round 67 secured a share of the lead with compatriots Jordan Spieth and Kevin Kisner. I knew I was coming in with some good golf.

The "where I was" referred to the years of debilitating back pain finally solved by a spinal fusion 15 months ago that allowed him to resume his career after four years of severely-curtailed appearances.

Rose's round progressed nicely until the turn, which he made at one over and got back to level at the 10th before holing a 20-footer at the short 13th to go into the red numbers for the first time since day one, just after his serenity was shattered by an errant photographer when he stood over a tiddler at the 5th to get to two under.

"I've played it out at Augusta in my head".

However, Tommy Fleetwood's chances of becoming the first English victor since Nick Faldo in 1992 looked to have gone after he pulled his third shot on the sixth out of bounds, the resulting double bogey leaving him six off the pace. "I need to go get it", Woods said.

Padraig Harrington's 2007 win at Carnoustie marked the last time the British Open champion made double-bogey in the final round and recovered in time to hoist the claret jug. "But, again, I'm very happy that I'm playing today", said the world No 87 who became the youngest Indian to make a cut in a major championship.

The moment Schauffele's approach stopped short on the 18th green the celebrations could start.

Justin Rose, Rory McIlroy and Kevin Kisner were also 6 under.

Molinari didn't make a bogey on his way to a 69 while playing alongside Woods. This is his 12th tournament of the year, and Woods has been among the top 10 just once - the Valspar Championship in March - going into the weekend.

"I think I hit it pretty good in the first five, six holes".

His 5-over-par 76 saw him drop out of an overnight three-way tie for the lead into a tie for ninth at 4-under 280, 4 shots behind victor Francesco Molinari.

Johnson overcame a bogey on the opening hole with birdies on the third and fourth holes, and he never put himself under too much pressure the rest of the way. "He's healthy. I wouldn't say we're anxious about him, but he's one of those guys that's always in with a shot".
