Ten new moons found around Jupiter

Astronomers Discover 12 New Moons Orbiting Jupiter

Researchers announced Monday that they'd discovered a dozen new moons around Jupiter, including a tiny one that they're calling an "oddball".

When you're scanning space for a distant planet, that's potentially lurking at the far edges of our solar system, it certainly pays off to keep an eye on what's going on a little closer to home!

Jupiter already had the most moons in the Solar System, but now scientists have discovered twelve new ones bringing the total up to 79. In this particular case, astronomers looking for the elusive Planet X beyond Pluto ended up finding an extra set of moons around Jupiter, Science Daily reports.

A research team led by astronomer Scott Sheppard of the Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington has identified a total of 12 small moons of Jupiter, including the 10 described on Tuesday.

It's easy to understand why these 12 new additions had been missed so far. Other than that, not much is known about it or the other confirmed moons. The Blanco four-meter telescope, at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in Chile, is equipped with a camera able to spot very faint objects.

"Jupiter just happened to be in the sky near the search fields where we were looking for extremely distant solar system objects", Sheppard explained.

If these raw materials had still been present when Jupiter's first moons collided to form its current clusters, the drag exerted on the smaller ones would have made them spiral inwards.

The Magellan telescope in Chile captured these recovery images of the oddball Jovian moon, known as Valetudo, in May.

Alisson set for Liverpool medical on Thursday
Los Blancos had been set to sign David De Gea in the summer of 2015 before the infamous "fax machine" incident scuppered the move. Alisson had been linked with Liverpool for some time and was subject of an unsuccessful inquiry back in January.

It should be noted that the July 17 announcement by Carnegie Science also contains two moons that had been previously found and announced in 2017. Because they are most likely clues to the origins of the planet itself. It's a rebel. It orbits in the same direction as Jupiter's spin, similar to the first two new moons.

"If we do find this planet in the next few years, it would be a pretty awesome discovery for astronomy".

The moons were discovered a year ago, but the IAU typically requires a year of calculations to confirm the existence of newly discovered moons.

The moons are now known by their numerical designations, such as S/2016 J2.

The last of the team's discoveries is the strangest of them all.

Various groupings of Jupiter's moons with the newly-discovered ones shown in bold; Valetudo has a prograde orbit that crosses the retrograde orbits. Ganymede, Jupiter's largest moon and the biggest in the solar system, has a diameter of about 5,300 kilometers (about 3,300 miles). Sheppard's girlfriend came up with a name for it: Valetudo, the great-granddaughter of the Roman god Jupiter, and the goddess of health and hygiene.

Astronomers think retrograde moons have a different origin story from prograde moons, which travel in the same direction that their planet rotates.

As a result, head on collisions are much more likely to occur between this "oddball" prograde moon and its retrograde cousins moving in opposite directions. The satellite's oddness comes from its tiny size and the fact that, although it's out in the realm of the retrograde moons, it's orbiting in the opposite direction to them. These moons take about two years to orbit Jupiter. When these moons were visible, Jupiter was very close to our own bright moon, so great care was needed to ensure that the images didn't saturate from overexposure.
