North Korea pardons criminals to mark regime's 70th anniversary

USA and North Korean military officials met in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) on Sunday to discuss the return of remains of United States soldiers killed during the Korean War, according to South Korea's Yonhap news agency.

"Both sides agreed to re-commence field operations in the DPRK to search for the estimated 5,300 Americans who never returned home", Pompeo said.

It was the first time in nine years that USA and North Korean generals held talks.

President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un agreed on the repatriation of remains at their June 12 summit in Singapore.

Pompeo said that working-level meetings would continue on Monday to discuss the next steps, including the actual transfer of the service members' remains from North Korea.

For the meeting Sunday, three U.S. Forces Korea vehicles came to the border area and switched to United Nations flags before driving to Panmunjom, Yonhap reported.

The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said that amnesty will be granted to those who were convicted of crimes against the country and people on the occasion of the North's 70th founding anniversary.

South Korean authorities said recovering the remains of US soldiers "was the sole topic for this meeting". It would be the first time that the remains believed to be those of USA troops have been directly returned by North Korean officials in 13 years.

Israel and Hamas exchange fire after day of deadly protests
The majority of those killed were involved in protests and clashes but others were seeking to breach or damage the border fence. The airstrikes targeted roughly 40 Hamas targets, where rockets and mortars were fired from earlier this weekend.

There were no reports from the North Korean side about the meeting.

The Korean War raged from 1950 until 1953, though it ultimately ended with a ceasefire agreement rather than a formal peace treaty, meaning it is still technically ongoing.

A USA delegation was expected to retrieve the remains in North Korea and fly them out on July 27, either to Osan Air Base in South Korea or Hawaii, the official said, adding that the date may change as the two sides planned to iron out final details during another meeting in the near future.

It was reported that USA forces readied some 100 wooden caskets at Panmunjom late last month to use in the event of recovering the remains from North Korea.

Among the missing foreign soldiers who are believed to have died in the conflict, around 165 were part of the Turkish Brigade, which supplied almost 15,000 troops to fight on the South's side during the war. But what, if anything, North Korea may be willing to hand over remains unclear.

Amid growing skepticism about his policy on North Korea, Trump disclosed a personal letter from Kim, boasting he had received "a very nice note" from Kim and that "great progress" is being made on denuclearization.

He later said he had made progress on setting a timeline for North Korea's denuclearization.
