'One of the Best on the Planet'

Croatia’s Lovren ‘I am one of the best in the world

Following Croatia's World Cup semi-final win over England on Wednesday, Lovren said he should start receiving more respect from the media both at club and worldwide level.

Born to Croatian parents in the Bosnian city of Zenica, Lovren was forced to flee to Germany at just three when the Bosnian War broke out in 1992. "Afterwards, I remember mum, my uncle, my uncle's wife, we took the auto and then we were driving to Germany". A first World Cup final in the country's short history.

"I think now in many years people will remember us, not the '98 team", added Lovren.

On Sunday, Lovren will contest a World Cup final against France less than two months after participating in the Uefa Champions League showpiece with Liverpool.

Vida and assistant coach Ognjen Vukojevic - who has since been sacked by Croatia - were filmed making comments including "Glory to Ukraine", a phrase that has been adopted by anti-Russian nationalists, after Croatia beat Russia on penalties in the quarter-finals. The central defender has formed a solid tandem with Domagoj Vida in the middle of the Croatian back line.

Cited as a consistently faltering defender, Lovren was blamed for quite a number of mistakes leading to goals against Liverpool last season.

"This is something we will never forget".

The FC guys break down Croatia's underdog mentality and wonder if it will be enough to get a win against France in the World Cup final.

'We have the chance to do something better, and hopefully we can do it on Sunday. We couldn't control the ball or control situations. "In the second half we were much better, we found space on the side and put in good crosses".

Dejan Lovren believes he should be regarded as one of the best defenders in the world after helping Croatia knock England out of the World Cup. But they hit back in the second half through Ivan Perisic before grabbing a victor in extra-time through Mario Mandzukic.

"90 per cent of the time he played outstanding, 95 per cent absolutely OK, and five per cent probably he was not at his best".
