N Korea, US hold talks on war dead repatriation

Donald Trump tweets 'very nice note' from Chairman Kim as North Korea a no-show for meeting on US troop remains

Thursday's delay was widely reported as a snub by North Korea, which has already kept the USA waiting for weeks since President Donald Trump agreed with Chairman Kim Jong-un on June 12 that America's war dead would be recovered, including the "immediate repatriation" of those already identified by the North.

North Korean table tennis players arrived in South Korea on Sunday to compete in an global tournament amid an atmosphere of detente between the rivals.

If U.S. repatriation efforts are successful, it could offer a boost to South Korean President Moon Jae-in's ambition to retrieve the remains of all Korean War participants.

Singapore was the host of a historic summit between Trump and Kim last month when they agreed to work toward the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, without describing when and how it would occur.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency, citing South Korean government and US military sources, said the negotiations had begun at 0100 GMT at the border village of Panmunjom in the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) separating the two Koreas.

A UNC official said he had no information to confirm the report, though preparations had been made for Sunday's talks.

North Korean players and officials have arrived in South Korea to take part in an global table tennis tournament set for this week in Daejeon.

US forces brought some 100 wooden coffins into the DMZ last month, which will be used to transport the remains, according to Yonhap.

The two Koreas remain in a technical state of war since their 1950-53 conflict ended in a truce, not a peace treaty.

Sunday's talks were expected to focus on such details as when and how the remains should be transferred.
