Trump Tells May Her Brexit Plan Will Kill Off US Trade Deal

Explainer Why is Northern Ireland such a big deal in Theresa May’s Brexit negotiations

He paid a brief visit to the US ambassador's central London residence before taking a helicopter to Blenheim Palace ― the monumental house where Winston Churchill was born― for a lavish dinner event with British Prime Minister Theresa May.

The English daily also quoted Trump as saying that Johnson would make a great prime minister.

Trump's interview with the British tabloid "The Sun" - in which he knocked May's "soft Brexit" compromise and boosted a rival within her own party - published Thursday and dealt a stunning diplomatic affront for a visiting United States president.

The US leader has recently threatened to hit imports of European cars with a 20-percent tariff if Brussels doesn't remove levies and other trade barriers on US goods.

Trump also used the interview to launch an attack on Theresa May's plans for Brexit which were unveiled in full yesterday and indicate a willingness on the UK's part to keep customs borders open with the EU. He backpedalled away the comments on Friday, saying of May's Brexit talks: "Whatever you're going to do is OK with us".

In the interview, Trump savaged Mrs May's Brexit strategy, suggesting it would "kill" any potential trade deal between Britain and the United States. As he said in his interview with The Sun she "is a very good person" and he 'never said anything bad about her.'.

May's office said it would not comment on The Sun article during a greeting when Trump met May at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst to review a military exercise. "I actually told Theresa May how to do it, but she didn't listen to me".

"She wanted to go a different route".

"You can't walk away but you can do other things".

The vote is going to go positive, because people don't want to be faced with the awful immigration problems that they are faced with in other countries.

"Lots of people give me advice about dealing with the European Union".

"If we'd elected Jeremy Corbyn past year, we'd be getting our Love Actually moment right now", she tweeted.

Trump called the Sun story "generally fine" but said that some of his remarks were left out.

"I fear that this has become a bad relationship-a relationship based on the president taking exactly what he wants and casually ignoring all those things that really matter to, um, Britain", Grant says in the film.

"I think he's got what it takes".

The US president did not have such glowing words for London Mayor Sadiq Khan, however.
