Anderson stuns Federer from match point down to reach Wimbledon semi-finals

I don't think this one naturally you can pinpoint exactly, except my match points.

Eight-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer says he "did not see defeat coming" before a shock quarter-final exit against Kevin Anderson.

The 32-year-old, who reached last year's US Open final, will face big-serving American John Isner in the semis. "I nearly could have".

Eight-time champion Roger Federer was sensationally knocked out of Wimbledon on Wednesday (Thursday in Manila) by South African giant Kevin Anderson while Rafael Nadal edged Juan Martin del Potro in a Centre Court epic and will meet Novak Djokovic in the semifinals. Isner hit 25 aces, saved the only break point he faced, and has won all 95 of his service games in the tournament.

It was Anderson's first win over Federer at his fifth attempt.

But Anderson is playing the best tennis of his career, having reached the final at Flushing Meadows last September and then a career-high ranking of No.7 in May.

The victory saw him become only the third man to come from two sets down to beat Federer, following in the footsteps of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Novak Djokovic, leaving the Swiss to ponder how he allowed the defence of his title to come to an end.

The comeback was just beginning.

"I've always believed that I have this in me, to constantly get better", Anderson said.

But Anderson's rock-solid belief was unshakeable, even when he faced a match point in the 10th game of the third set.

How hard was it to see this coming? That took great self-belief, he added, knowing that he had never taken a set off 20-time major victor Federer in four previous meetings. But there was more.

Boris Becker said Anderson had played the "game of his life" and, to many, will be known as the man who ended Federer's run.

"I kept telling myself to keep believing".

Anderson was the runner-up to Nadal at last year's U.S. Open, but he never made it beyond the fourth round at Wimbledon until this week.

Federer missed a break point at 4-3 in the decider and, as he continued to make forehand errors, Anderson's unwavering focus looked to be tipping the match in his favour.

Nishikori, who had won only two matches in 15 meetings with the 12-time major victor, broke for 1-0 in the fourth but was broken straight back.

"Yeah, of course, the goal is to come back here next year", said Federer, who has won three Grand Slams over the last two years.

The 12-time major victor prevailed despite picking up two code violations and accusing umpire Carlos Ramos of "double standards".

Djokovic, seeded 12th, incurred a warning for throwing his racket and was clearly frustrated, complaining of "double standards" when Nishikori was not punished for a racket throw.

"I think it went in spells a bit also, how I was able to return his serve".

Later, Ramos warned Djokovic for a time violation, but that didn't seem to faze the Serb. "I guess in the end I was right".

But in a simply stunning two years since, the grand master has lost just seven of 88 matches and taken his record title haul to a magical 20 slams. "I don't want to stop here".

"It's just not one of my best days, but they don't happen very often", added Federer.

He'll have to get past Nadal first.
