Gareth Southgate: Inspiration for England, Even in Defeat

Cheering for England! Mark Holder in Southgate Road

Gareth Southgate's England team were hailed as heroes by British media, who acclaimed their achievement rather than dwelled on disappointment after their heart-breaking World Cup exit on Wednesday. Germany then reached the semi-finals in their next five major tournaments - winning the World Cup in 2014 - before their shock group-stage exit in Russian Federation. Croatia's fans react after a goal as they watch the broadcast of the World Cup semi-final match between Croatia and England in the fan zone.

"I'm anxious, but I've got my fingers crossed", said 27-year-old Charlie Conroy as the clock ticked away.

Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic attended the semi-final game against England last night in Moscow where Croatia won 2-1 after extra time.

"The only wish I have is to lift the cup for Croatia". The sentiment comes after the Croatian team has had a Cinderella-story tournament, in which they beat many teams they were expected to fall to. Still, with England fielding the second-youngest squad all around at the World Cup this year, there's plenty for Southgate to take pride in. Croatia were better than us, and they deserved to go through.

Coming off two games that went to overtime, Croatia was supposed to be the team that was exhausted.

Thailand cave rescue: Boys 'can walk but can't dive yet'
Time is of the essence since more flooding rains are expected over the weekend, and oxygen in the caves may be running low. He said he was also making an "inflatable tube with airlocks", which was "less likely to work, given tricky contours".

MOSCOW-England defender Kyle Walker is finding meaning in the game no one wants to play. It said: "The more I see, the more important it is that when 'attacking this tournament" we tell our own story. They've made so many breakthroughs throughout the tournament.

Milojko Pantic, a well-known sports commentator when Yugoslavia was still a single country, said that Serbs with a sense of brotherliness had supported Croatia in the quarter-finals while those who wanted to see Russian Federation beat Croatia were "bigots and nationalists". "I think he has been the player of the tournament regardless of the result on Sunday".

The rest of us must also recognise how successful these players can be - those who became used to winning with the Under 21s and the age groups below that.

I am very much on Gareth's side in support of a job where you are so exposed so often it's as if you are standing in front of a dartboard, the easiest of targets, when there's a game going on.
